I'm currently searching for a 90's-ish 54cm Cannondale to start my foray into collegiate cycling.

Looking at these three bikes, are they worth it?

1. He wants at least $750 for it...plus the $100 shipping... 2002 Cannondale R3000 Si Road & Triathlon Bicycle | eBay

all pretty overpriced. and you dunno if the bikes fit you and you cant return em. bad idea.

and i personally wouldn't buy used carbon fiber. never know if its been crashed.

if you want to get in collegiate cycling, id save up and buy an entry level bike. youll get a descent first fit and tune ups for free, as well as warranty. pretty invaluable imho

I've sized them all out - they fit. It's not a spur of the moment ebay search. Not gonna waste my money on an entry level bike when I can get an older bike (maybe not as pretty), with much higher quality components. Components can last forever, frames come and go. But thanks for the input.

Aaah, you may want to rethink your logic. I have worn out many components, my frame has close to 30K on it. There isn't a single original part on it. Components are wear items.

you've got it all wrong...your buying a frame, components come and go.

a 2011 or 2012 entry level bike is NOT a waste of money, big brands (specialized, trek, cannondale) usually have sora tiagra which work very very well. believe me you will spend more money and time than you think with an used bike... you might wanna check out bikesdirect.com youll love their price/component selection (im very serious about this)

but maybe you will learn the hard way.

Looked at bikesdirect. Thats a big time no way. A good set of Mavic's and Ultegra components will go a long way. Just my opinion. I'm not really interested in the new, entry-level frames.

The two cannon... are way overpriced, specially the second one that basically what it worth is the fork only. Those frames are really bad finished, not saying are bad ok? but the finishing is terrible, looks like they build them, and then they figured it out that they needed to move stuff around and crimp some tubes because of clearance.

The trek i think is too small but is not bad in my opinion, hope u get lucky.

I'm just asking for opinions on these bikes...I'm sorry. I don't mean to be an a**hole, I'm just not interested in the offerings that are out there for new bikes in the $700 price range. Part of it is cosmetic too I guess - I like the simplicity.

I'm all for getting a good used bike instead of a lower level new bike, but I would pass on those Cannondales due to the price considering how old they are. The first one with the Buy It Now turns me off because the seller is a BSer. It's almost 10 years old, 9 speed, and all the parts could be at end-of-life.
Keep looking, and check Craigs List if you are in a metro area.

The Trek would be an OK deal if the seller wasn't lying or ignorant about the bike. The 2007 was solid colored, that coloring scheme looks like a 2005. The 2007 had all 105, if it were a 2005 it may have had 105 with an Ultegra RD, those bikes retailed for $1050, and nobody pays retail for bikes anyway. The Cannondales are both way overpriced. If you have your heart set on used, you may want to check bike shops selling on consignment. You aren't going to get a steel of a deal because they know what the bikes are worth, but it will most likely have been tuned up and looked over. Reputation is important for local bike shops, so they will generally try not to sell complete junk, even used.

seriously, you are dead off on the life of wheels and components (especially w/ well used DA and untestable Ebay gear). These are not good buys if you are trying to buy a reliable competition cycle. Trust the respondents that you "opinion" is wrong. Don't get hung up on "names of value" because a name doesn't help you ride if the part it is on is past its prime. You stand a really good chance of wasting your time and money chasing an image...

Those bikes your looking at are priced too high, and you have to figure in the shipping cost which makes them even worse deals. If you watch Craigslist long enough you will find way better deals then that and you can go see them and ride them to make sure their in good shape. There was a 2007 or 8 Trek Modone 4.5 in my town on Craigslist last week for $750 and it probably sold for less. Modern Bikes do not hold their value long so you can get fairly new high level bikes for a song when their only 3 or more years older.

And as everyone has said components come and go, the frames can last forever...so your backwards in your thinking no matter what you think.

Ok. So I found this one close to home. I know its not an amazing frame, but it is 2 years old and almost all the components have been upgraded - and extra components are included. Also - the seller told me it has been stored indoors the whole time. He is willing to go to $800. Do you guys think that is fair?

^Actually, that's not a bad price. He says the price is negotiable, so try to get it down to $700.

Also, if this is your first road bike, that cassette+crank combo is going to break your knees.

And in what way will it break my knees? Just curious. Too big of gearing? If so, I guess I'll just have to get stronger and show those gears who's boss.

That gearing is about as tough as it gets. Where do you live? If it's hilly, you're gonna want at least an 11-25.

Have $700 cash in hand when you go to buy it and see what he says then. The Ultegra is a nice upgrade to that bike, but the frame itself is about as cheap as they come. That was originally a $400 bike complete (with Sora components). Still, as long as it doesn't feel like a wet noodle when you sprint on it, it should be fine for racing.

It looks like that might be what the other cassette is? I live in Minneapolis. Not ridiculously hilly, but as you get out of town it can be.

Yeah from what I have seen it is not a wonderful frame, but people seem to be pleasantly surprised with it (https://www.bikeforums.net/archive/in.../t-301040.html). I'll try it out and hope its ok. But as for the $700 trick, I don't know if I have to balls to pull that off IRL, especially after negotiating with him already...

That was a telephone negotiation, those rarely represent the bottom line, if he hasn't had a better offer I would do the $700 thing while there.

Let me just add that showing up with $700 cash AFTER you have talked about a pretty firm price over the phone is a ****** bag move. He has told you he is firm at $800, so if you dont have $800, dont go waste his time & your time
