Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Twilight Cycling" Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway

I managed to go to the event and actually rode my bike on the track!! All I got to say is that was one of the most thrilling bike rides I ever been on. Especially on the corkscrew!

as fun as that sounds (and believe me, it sounds fun!!), I can't imagine going thru the corkscrew without a 150hp racebike shod with michelin race slicks underneath me...

haha you are so right, especially going up the hill towards the corkscrew was killer!! I didn't think that hill would be so tiresome!!

Does anybody use Michelins anymore? MotoGP has Bridgestone spec tires, WorldSBK has Pirelli, and AMA has Dunlop. Are they paying good contingency money at the club level? (I abandoned them in 2005 in favor of Bridgestone myself, because the money was better)

The track day looks fun, bicycle or motorcycle - it's a great place nonetheless. Thanks for sharing, OP.

With cars on it, the corkscrew can look small and tight...the bikes make it look huge and wide!

I see a racetrack and fancy cars. Where are the vampires and werewolves? You've got a lot of nerve...

Best race track evar!!

Used to go to the annual Historic Cares Races there and watch the old cars get yanked through the cork screw. Sweet pics!

I've done Laguna Seca on a Kawasaki factory superbike (nearly 20 years ago now). At speed, on a superbike, it looks very narrow in places (like turn 6 and the corkscrew). Seems like a great track for a bicycle, though. Great criterium possibilities. And I would tend to agree -- the climb to the corkscrew is probably pretty tough.

That sounds like a blast. And you got to see a Lotus Evora too!

Using the handy dandy MapMyRide site... The part leading up to the corkscrew is a Cat 5 climb with an average of 3.5% grade for 0.82 miles.

That looks like great fun! My favorite racetrack! At least it was on GT3~ heh.

Pretty sweet. Thanks for sharing! Looks like it would be a great place for crit racing.

Btw, I noticed your bike was leaning against a Ferrari. Nobody had a problem with that?

Why do you have two brake levers on a single speed bike with no rear brakes?

That's not a Ferrari, it's Lotus Evora.

I've done that track on a 600 but I have to say that I'm truly jealous of you doing it on a bike lol.

Awesome. I'm shocked at how narrow that road is - hard to imagine 3 cars jostling for postion across that.

I love this track, been wanting to do a track day there for years, but having to put on your stock exhaust is a pain.

It would feel weird without the other brake lever. it just acts like a dummy, yet functional. I want to get a geared bike and try out the track next time!! would be much better ride than my single speed.

I used Mich back in the mid 90's when I was road racing... haven't been paying much attention lately so I have no idea...

I need to make my way over there for Twilight Racing looks like a lot of fun. Hopefully the corkscrew is a lot more fun on bike than it is in car. In a car, its kind of a boring turn, turn in hard -- unwind wheel -- ride straight down on the burm. T3, T5, T6, and Rainey Curve are much more interesting and challenging turns and the places where you can really lose a lot of time on.

There is a race on the track every year. It's part of the Sea Otter classic.

If you visit Mazda Laguna Seca's website, search twilight cycling and they do it once a month!
