Broken bottom bracket on a beautiful day

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Broken bottom bracket on a beautiful day

On one of the most beautiful days in the Ozarks for the past two months, the old Schwinn sits in the garage with the bearings shot in the bottom bracket, and me without the proper tools or local shops open to fix it...

I'm thinking that the local Giant dealer is going to make a sale shortly after they open in the morning... the 2011 Defy 1 has been in my crosshairs for about a month now, and this repair issue has the Mrs. endorsing a new purchase.

Once the Giant store opens then there'll be a 'local shop open' that can fix the Schwinn.

She is a little confused about why I want to keep the old bike after I get the new one... she hates clutter, and likes to get rid of anything that isn't being used on a regular basis, and that can't be shoved out of sight.

It's going to be hard to justify the $50-plus it will take for the tools and new BB (or to have it fixed) on the old bike after spending just shy of 2K on the new bike plus accessories. Of course, a new bike needs a new computer, pedals, bag, bottle racks, pump, etc. ;-)

Oh, yeah... It got it. Just waiting on some new stuff to come in the mail (105 series pedals, Cateye Wireless, some more modern bottle cages):
