Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does this look like a cracked rim?

Hi guys,

I am looking to buy a new set of wheels and have found a set of mavic open pro's on ebay which the buyer described as having a 'nick' on the rim. I requested a phot of said 'nick' and was sent the attached photo. Just wanted anyones opinion on weather or not it something more sinister, looks might like a crack to me.

The crack I had in my OP ran parallel to the wheel...right from the center of the eyelet about a 1/2 inch towards the next one. While this looks different, I agree it looks like a crack. It looks like you can see the crack run from the brake surface to the eyelet. If you want to be persistent, ask for one more photo with camera in "macro" mode...that should clinch it.

Yep. If it originates at the nipple like it looks like it does then that's pokered.

It's hard to tell in a pic, but I see what could be small cracks migrating out from more than one eyelet on the rim, not just the most noticeable one. I'd stay away from that one.

I think it is, but I would take it to your LBS to have them take a hands on look at it.

He'd have to buy it first.

I was going to say it looked like just a paint chip. Then I saw the 1 cm long crack heading north out of the nipple behind the one with the chip. That is the more common failure mode of rims. That rim is toast. Guy is a dick for selling them like that without disclosing the cracking. Let him know.

I would go farther than that. If he doesn't fix the listing, report the auction to ebay. That rim's value is zero. The whole wheel has some value due to the hub. The auction and price should reflect this.

There seems to be small cracks on the other nipples as well.

That rim has been around the block a few thousand times. Or at least that's the condition it's in.

Thanks so much for the quick and helpful responses guys! I have let the seller know that he is dealing with a cracked rim, so hopefully his conscience will persuade him to amend the auction details.
