Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Why black or white?

When I search for bike parts like stems, handlebars, seatposts etc., a lot of them (especially ones on sale) are painted. And they're often either black or white. Why does it seem that the bike industry prefers this? I used to put my locks on my handlebars. And of course, after a while, the paint ends up being worn off. It ends up making the bike look really cheap. Heck, even rims are often black instead of silver. Why no love for silver or chrome?

I gots love for silver and chrome. Probably cheaper to paint/powdercoat the parts instead of chroming or buffing them to a shine.

A bunch of them are different colors of grey, too.
The "dark anodized" phase was bad enough. ( Although I DO have a set of very cool, dark copper colored brakes with matching wheels )
I don't mind a nice set of painted wheels, but the spokes chip off too easily.

Trends. Parts used to be silver (metal), then they started "hard anodizing" (dark brownish gray) rims, then they started anodizing things black, then they painted other things black to match. Now we're entering a while phase. Whatever.

Because black and white are easiest to match to other crazy colors. Cyclists are all about fashion and if a bike clashes with their team or club jersey or something I bet a good number of them won't ride it.

I prefer bare metal for the aluminum bits, but I have some anodizied parts on my bike. I'm drawing the line at white though; no white.

My bike is black and white, so this works well for me.

Although my seat is more of a dark grey with a silver stripe... and it's killing me.

Not the ride comfort, no that's great. It's the way it throws off my otherwise entirely white/black color scheme!

Naked aluminum looks like it's been in a time capsule since the 1970s or '80s.
