Possible CF Frame Damage? Used purchase.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Possible CF Frame Damage? Used purchase.

I'm not very knowledgeable on carbon fiber frames at all, and from everything I'm reading it's best to inspect as carefully as possible when buying second hand.

The frame in question is a Lemond Buenos Aires. The biggest point of concern is at the rear triangle, right where the brake mounts. (Rear crown?) Is this a big red flag? Appreciate the help.

I can't tell from the photo if the paint is worn down to the carbon (too big a tire?) or if this is a large hole in the frame, but it looks more like the former?

Still I don't think I'd chance it, but I personally have a lower risk tolerance than other people.

I'd pass on it for sheer stupidity of the previous owner. If he managed to do that, who knows what else that frame and fork have been though.

There are a lot of things that could be said. The word "good" won't be used in any of them.

In all honesty, no one here will be able to give you a 100% thumbs up/thumbs down by reviewing the picture. If you have a concern, assume it's a thumbs down until you can take it to someone to inspect, like a reputable local bike shop.

Although it might currently be unsound, Craig Calfee's shop might be able to fix. So, depending on your initial investment, you might still be in good shape.

Good luck!
