Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lake shoes cx330=7 mm valgus angle built in, WHY??

So, I got a really good deal on some lake cx330s on bonktown. I try them on and they feel ok. Mount up my cleats and go for a ride and my feet feel like they are at crazy angles. I go home and measure them and the outside of the shoe sits 7 mm higher than the inside when the cleat is flat. I measured my sidi ergo 2s and they are flat.

Why would they do this when most people need a slight varus angle. There is no way I can get enough shims in the shoe and cleat to make it flat.

Are these shoes defective? It looks like the carbon sole was molded this way. They are size 48 with the speed play drilling. Now am out $100 because I can't return them after I am mounted cleats and ridden them.

Specialized shoes some with a slight varus angle to them which would be the opposite. The inside sits slightly higher than the outside. I think it only 1mm.

No you aren't. Bonktown return policy: "You can return any product for any reason within 30 days of purchase. No questions asked. Returns made after 30 days will not be accepted."

I've returned lots of ridden shoes to bonktown and they've taken them all. You can't tell if a shoe is going to fit unless you ride with it. Don't buy one from anyone, internet or LBS, who doesn't let you return ones that won't work on the bike.

I sent a message to bonktown asking if I can return them and don't want to be out shipping both ways also. I don't see how anybody could have the biomechanics for the shoes to work. I'll see what they say.

I doubt you'll get anywhere on shipping, but it's worth a try. I'd be shocked if they didn't take them back, though.

Took a pic of my Lake CX-170 for your reference. I have a 1mm varus shim (purple shim) installed with Speedplay cleats. Mine is the 3 hole shoe though, not the 4 hole Speedplay version. Hope it helps.

i bought the same shoe (43) and just noticed the valgus myself! wtf! I bought them as backup shoes (my others are the S-works) but if they fit like Sh*t what's the point. The s-works built in varus is perfect so this much valgus scares me. I'll cleat them up and try them tonight. If i hate them.. straight back to bonktown.

Well, +1 internets to bonktown. They sent me a prepaid ups label and will give me a full refund including shipping. They agree that is a defective product.

Bonktown has some great CS. I got some Lake shoes (CX236) that were just a tad too small. Asked for an exchange and not only are they sending a replacement size via USPS Priority (which was my original shipping method, but I didn't pay this time), but they also told me to use the prepaid return label included in the first package. They also called me to confirm the exchange which is always nice, although I have no problems dealing over email.

That said, my CX236 shoes looked quite flat when I briefly mounted speedplay cleats to see what they were like. Does the other shoe have the same problem?
