Sorry to hear about your accident.

I had one myself over the weekend, with identical injuries to yours. Different circumstances, was riding with a group had one hand off the bars to signal a turn, hit something in the road and went over the bars at 22MPH headfirst into the road. Because of the concussion I can't remember what happened, and nobody saw exactly what I hit, so I can't say for sure what I could have done differently. I'm very grateful my injuries were relatively minor compared to what they could have been given the speed and how I fell.

As rattled as I am by my own incident, I at least take some solace that since it was a solo accident it was probably preventable by my own actions. I can't imagine how you must feel since yours was out of your control... but you certainly seem like you're handling it logically and with good spirits.

On a side note: I love SpeedPlays immensely for riding, but I was pretty surprised they didn't come off on the crash and they exacerbated my injuries, as they did yours. I might drop a note to them about how their product handles in those circumstances.

Damn. Glad you're ok! Also glad the driver was insured and (at least) your medical bills will be paid and your bike will be replaced.

I'd suggest getting back in the saddle as soon as you can, to avoid this incident from stoping you from enjoying cycling.

Good to hear you are ok and that the driver was fully covered. Heal well and get back on your new bike as soon as you feel comfortable. I'm also glad to hear that the driver was concerned enough to personally follow up on your condition. Some accidents are just that, accidents. When you get back on the road though, remember that some "accidents" are caused by apathetic or arrogant drivers, and ride like everyone of them is a potential threat to you. Hopefully this will be your last encounter.....

Happened to me last month. Right-hooked at 20mph by a kid trying to jump two lanes and get into a parking lot. He was uninsured. My helmet really helped me out as I hit my head on the curb. Bike was totaled. My car insurance did nothing because I wasn't covered on my bicycle. Kid has no money and has to turn off his cell phone every other month because he can't afford it. My homeowners insurance did cover my bike (even away from my house!). $500 deductible but I'm still getting around $1800 and CRAZILY am buying another bike after swearing off riding immediately after the accident.

One thing I didn't expect is that I'm a very different rider now. I was all about how fast I could go and never even thought about accidents. Now I ride my touring bike slowly and am petrified of right hooks to the point of probably being MORE in danger due to my constant looking back at every damn intersection. This is something I didn't expect. Hopefully it will subside but it's been a month and I'm still majorly paranoid.

Good luck with recovery. My injuries were less severe than yours and in a week I couldn't even tell you what side was injured if I didn't look at the healed road rash.

Hey all.. just a quick note to again express my appreciation for the well wishes and advice. Things are progressing quite smoothly, I've received the replacement cost check for the bike, helmet, shorts, pedals + tax; pretty pleased with how that worked out. They don't want the bike back, told me to dispose of it how I wish. There are some parts that are just fine so tore that down this weekend. It will be a few more weeks on the rest, but I have to say that I could not have hoped for a better experience with the insurance company. I'm healing up quite well, still a bit sore here and there, but continued stretching and keeping mobile is helping I think. Still a bit up in the air as to what bike I'll land on. My wife has had a really hard time with this, and frankly I'm not sure that I want to put her through the worry that will likely torment her if I'm back on the road. Time heals though, so I'll see how things play out there. There is a nice greenway where I live so that is a decent option too.

Anyway, I'm very fortunate on many levels with this... that I made it out as well as I did, the driver was responsible and did the right thing and the insurance company has been good to deal with. I'd sure prefer to be talking about the great rides I had this weekend though!

Replacement cost for helmet? If this means you were wearing a helmet, what kind was it? I find it surprising you got a mild concussion.

Very scary. Just remember that doing the activity as it's intended is no more dangerous than going down stairs or getting out of the shower. You can break your neck either way. The road is no more dangerous now than it was during all those days you confidently rode. I am still recovering from a fractured acetabulum ( pelvis socket) along with other pelvic cracks. This happened July 23rd and I still have two more weeks to go before I am allowed to attempt to walk. If my body allows, and I think it will, I'll be on the road again by spring (that's mid may here in Maine, so I have plenty of time to build up again!)
Count your blessings, now get a new bike and pop on the trainer for a couple of weeks until you are so bored you are dying to get out on the road!

It is/was a Giro Monza, replacement cost came in at $105.00. Yes, fortunate actually that it was only a mild one. My head hit the hood when I was struck (actually cracked the styrofoam in a couple places) and then again when I landed.

There's no way it's the same risk in terms of likelihood of incident and severity of incident. Being struck by a car is way more force than any household fall. Being actually run over by a car (as in, you go under and out the back) is incomparable to any fall and nearly always fatal.

Likelihood of incident, well we can debate that a lot. The more you're on the road the more likely you're going to get hit at some point. We don't shower for hours at a time.
