Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

honestly, it's nothing to worry about at all. the main thing that you SHOULD be worrying about is whether or not you get numbness, cause that IS something to worry about and can cause issues down the road that you don't want to be a part of. that's a real issue, the issue that you're having happenes to a lot of people and that isn't going to affect you after the ride, it's just more of an ego issue...

This thread is from 2011 and you don't need a penis when you ride either. Most of the women I see don't have one!

Once you decide to keep riding the same seat, eventually your body adapts and the problem goes away. Saddle time. I find the old Selle Italia 1980 and 1990 available again now, the best. Try anything different and it is a matter of months to adapt.

Just out of curiosity, how did the OP know that his johnson had gone all the way back in? Was this during a post-ride check? Numbness occasionally occurs, the dragon going back into his cave has never happened.

so, explain this:

FWIW, it happens to me most rides as well... Apparently, not to Nibali.

During this year's TDF, the wife couldn't help but point out Nibali's package every time he stepped onto the podium. She's convinced he was chubbing it up before he stepped up there. Personally, while I prefer not to think about Nibali's package at all, my conclusion is that he's just what you'd call 'blessed'.

point is, it doesn't appear that his turtle has retreated into the shell, so-to-speak. And he was just doing some pretty heavy duty efforts... Is it just that he has so little body fat that there is no shell into which to retreat?

turtling...

Shrinkage? Not normally related. This is more of a reaction of the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system to make as much oxygen available to your muscles as possible as you stress your body. Any non-essential parts to the task at hand get restricted blood flow (digestive system, reproductive system, etc.). This happens to all endurance athletes, and I wouldn't be too concerned about it (unless you happen to be riding with some ladies you are trying impress...)
I have experienced this aptly named "turtling" situation and it has nothing to do with oxygen/muscles. It happens to me from the instant I get on the bike. It is somehow related to anatomy and the position of sitting. I've tried different shorts and seats and nothing helps.
