Buying normal pants for abnormal legs

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Buying normal pants for abnormal legs

I'm posting here because you guys might have some experience with similar problems. My quads are kind of large in comparison to my waist and I'm having trouble finding normal (non-cycling) clothes (jeans) that fit well.

A female friend recently told me that my clothes are too baggy, so I tried to buy some jeans that fit better. It feels like an impossible task. Anything that fits my waist well (I'm a 30Wx32L) are impossible to fit around my quads. So I tried to compromise and try on some 32Wx32L and wear a belt, but most styles are still uncomfortably tight around my quads. The baggier styles of pants obviously fit better, but the whole point was to try to find something less baggy.

Does anyone have any tips or know how to look for clothes that might fit better? If you know of a previous thread on this, feel free to post it, a quick search didn't find anything.

I feel your pain. Clothing is not made to fit cyclists.

Haha, welcome to my world Try classic levi's 32x32 maybe. The thing is that u have to get used to clothing that is tight too, jeans stretch so if the 32x32 fits kind'a tight just use them and in a couple of weeks will be ok. As for dockers thats a tough one because you legs are pretty wide maybe and no matter what u use the pant legs will tend to "climb" your legs and will look like short pants while u walk. No way to avoid that.

Levis had a jeans that had zipper and the legs were wider, that could fit you I guess, sadly I cant remember the number... 569 loose straight i believe was called, haven't seen it in a while but maybe they have something similar.

Good luck

Funny u say that on TMZ the other day the caught Apolo Ohno on the street and thats what he was talhing about. During training for the olympics he cant fit into jeans cause his quads are massive.

Wow, an actually relevant question for once - and no, I am not being facetious.

My wife dragged me to Nordstrom a couple of years ago. She grabbed more than a dozen different styles of jeans and made me try them on. We found one that worked. It was a pair of Lucky brand loose bootleg jeans. They cost a bit more than I would have liked to spend, but they fit well enough.

Since that, though, I haven't found anything else, and even the same style Lucky jeans don't always look right.

I also suggest you avoid anything that has the term slim fit or vintage in the description.

Also, there is a growing number of companies offering custom jeans, and they actually aren't that much more expensive than what a lot of jeans cost. I can't think of any names though, but I read about it in the Wall Street Journal about a year ago.

Stopped buying jeans for this reason. Jeans that fit tended to ride up my rear end because I'm all quads w/ no arse. Carhartts fit well and are comfortable, so they have become my jeans. The ones with the flannel lining are heaven in the winter for morning dog walks in 10 degree weather.

The skinny pants trend doesn't help either. All pants now look like "girl pants". I've found some jeans that fit, but I have to try them on first.

I have thick thighs/quads AND a big butt, so even though my actual waist is around 30", I generally have to buy 34 pants, otherwise they won't get up past my legs. I've found that Levis 505 32x30 fit me well, though. I also have a pair of Old Navy jeans that actually fit pretty well, but I can't remember the style. Probably Regular Straight.

I'm wearing 32x32 classic fit (501) levi's as I type! They're what prompted me to post this -- they're pretty uncomfortable for the time being, especially when I'm biking, but I was hoping that wearing them would make them stretch out a bit. We'll see... I tried on the 31x32 and was barely able to put them on at all, completely incapable of motion once I'm wearing them, even though the waist had plenty of room. Ugh. The 550 or 560 (I forget which, possibly both?) is much more comfortable, but baggy (which is fine with me, but apparently runs counter to my goal...).

Man I'm really happy to hear I'm not the only one.

Oh, another thing to consider is to never wash your jeans (another thing I read about in the WSJ). Washing denim shrinks the fabric and ruins any stretch you've worked in to them.

If you get something on them, spot clean them. If they start to smell, hang them up outside to air them out. And if you do need to wash them, they said to lay the jeans flat in a bathtub and lightly move them around in the water.

Of course, I don't follow any of that - it's way too much work.

Um, yeah, wash your jeans, but don't dry them in the drier - hang dry.

Nordstrom's has tailoring available. I imagine other stores do as well. It costs money, but nice looking pants on a nice looking man are worth it.

I like how some of you guys will spend $300 on a slightly lighter carbon bit, but not $10-20 on some decent tailoring. I too have a big butt and quads for my waist. I usually buy 1 size up and have the waist and leg opening brought in by my tailor. Perfect fit. The Swrve jeans are good too. Levi 501s and 514s are great pants for guys with bigger thighs.

If you want to look GOOD, get some raw denim. They're tight at first, but good denim will stretch around you and fit amazingly. They're supposed to be quite tight at first and will stretch were they need to.
