Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cranks and Winter Build

Thread topics come and go in waves around here. Which bike, which color tape, triple to double, aerobars, you name it.

With the recent spate of gearing threads (crank vs. cassette vs. replacing both), I just had to share my most recent acquisitions.

With Nashbar's current monster frame sale, I got a couple of frames and a crankset for a winter build. I wager that more than 90% of this forum are FSA haters, but say what you will: A compact 10 speed compatible crank and external bearing BB for $60 is nothing to sneeze at. Each build seems for me to originate around one component, and that component is different each time - this time, it is the cranks. Chrome with faint blue/chrome chainring bolts. I've owned FSA stuff for many bikes, and frankly cannot tell enough difference, if any, between it and Shimano. Neither have 'broken' on me, and that's a 6,000 mile year.

Since the frames are naked, I am going to have one powedercoated. I've never had the patience for a bare bones build before as I want to ride it sooner than I can build it, but summer left without warning here, much as it arrived, and one can feel winter already. Plenty of time for a $200/month build.

For the small group of you who aren't too proud to sport FSA stuff, it's these.

I am not a FSA hater. They sell a good range of products-- they have cheap stuff that is BETTER than most other cheap stuff, and they have good stuff that is CHEAPER than most other good stuff.

I would consider the FSA SL-K crank if you're going for performance. I'm not positive which model I'd use on a tight budget. EDIT: looking at your link kinda helps. The Omega cranks are a value offering for sure, but I would put them against anything similarly priced any day.
