Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saddle for heavier rider

I know saddles are very personal items and everyone's opinion is unique. What I'd like to know is if there are recommended saddles for heavier folks. I weigh between 205 and 210 lbs depending on the day. My LBSs sell specific brands so the selection is limited. There might be better saddles out there that fit my needs that LBSs don't have or are unaware of. For instance, I've heard many Selle Italia saddles are not suited for heavier people due to the flexing in the wider parts. The LBS folks don't mention this.

TIA!

Just avoid saddles with ti or carbon rails, everything else should work, at least for a while.
See if you can try those Fizik demo saddles, among others.

The OP is about my weight. I've ridden a saddle with Ti rails for years, there's no problem.

My weight, too, and the last ti rail saddle I had broke after a couple years.

Specialized Toupe Team 143 with hollow Ti rails, minimal padding, and I am also a heavier rider, no issues, ultra comfy...

Try a Toupe...have your sit bones measured if possible...if not try and ride. I ride a 155mm toupe and 155 Romin. I prefer the Toupe generally.

Make that two of us. Kium rails are fine. Save your money.

I'm the OP and I probably should add that I do mostly longer, slower rides. Usually 20 on weekdays and 40 on Saturdays, all at around 17-20 mph pace. So I don't want a racing saddle but one that will allow decent pacing with good support. My goal is to do a century within the next 8 months. I will check out the recommendations given thus far tho.

Thanks all!

I'm a big fan of the Selle San Marco Regal Ti. I Weigh about 225 lb at 8% bodyfat and haven't bent a rail on any of the 3 I own.

I love my SMP pro.
I'm 285 and this saddle is just fine for me. And as for ti rails, pretty much all the saddles I've had for my road and mtn bike have had ti rails and I've had no problems.

Try to get measured or try some wider saddles on the cheap. Sit bones are not always directly related to weight. Build and frame maybe...but not always weight.

Psst...155mm Alias available in the Road Bike Marketplace:

I ride a carbon (saddle shell, not rails) with Kium (sp?) rails. I've got a sport model as well, which was a take off, on my other road bike. they are great seats, but you have to get the angle just right.

No intention to derail the post.

Anybody gone from Arione to the Aliante?

Care to compare and contrast?

I can't find a used Aliante to try, and the new ones are kinda expensive if it does not work out. I am a clyde at 215Ibs, and I wonder whether I can find nirvana with the Aliante.

We'll see.

Trob - It might be profitable to post this question in the Clydesdale and Athena subforum here.

I'm 6'2"/195, and have widely-spaced sitbones. Saddles which have worked for me are the Selle Italia Turbomatic (current production), Specialized Avatar (155mm), and Brooks Team Professional.

I did. The Arione was no bueno for me after 20 miles. The Aliante, while still not as easy on me as my Brooks, is a good compromise all around (looks, weight, comfort, etc.).

Aren't the Aliantes included in the demo thing? You know, the orange loaner saddles that some stores have?

When I wanted to try an Aliante, I bought an almost new Aliante Sport on ebay for $35. I think Sports are take-offs from new bikes. A year later I bought a new one for $60.

Yes, sports are take offs. With the cost of good saddles,I wouldn't buy without a demo program. Find a shop that carries Fiziks and try them out.
