Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I finished my ride up in the dark last night. I was out by myself and had a great time. Just bought a mynewt 600 lumen light and I'm loving it. New tail light should arrive in a few days as well.

You can do group rides at least 4 nights week here at night- Tue and Thu from a bike shop, Sun and Wed from a local pub. The Sunday night ride is a pub crawl. Lights required.

I'm a morning person.

Up at 5:30 to do tempo or threshold rides before work. I can shower at work so I drive there with my bike and I'm on the road by 6:30. I'm in the middle of a 4-week lazy/unwinding period, so I might get up that early to ride 1/week instead of 3.

I've been riding at after dark all summer. I live in a small community.

Before dark the traffic is heavy, people are out walking for exercise or walking dogs even people riding horses.

I started going after dark and some nights I can put in 10 miles and never meet a car or a person.

You gotta love small town living

Actually, as of October 2, there will be 1 hour more daylight in the evenings than there is now. But even so, every day there is a little bit more daylight.

We continued to ride in the dark after work till about mid-May, but May was a particularly chilly, rainy month, and riding in the cold rain in the dark just wasn't appealing, so we quit our outside evening rides till August when we went to Canada.

Was out the door at 06:00 this morning for a 2.25 hr ride before work. No need for night rides really. The latest sunrise we get here is 7:25. On the other hand, the earliest sunset we get is 5:19. With a liberal lunch "hour", I get all the riding I need during the day.

I have, not being a morning person. This time of year, I enjoy night riding. I can get the first half of my ride in while the sun is up, or at the horizon, and do the second half at dusk. It's not freezing or raining yet, and the city is very scenic at dusk.

By the way, it should be their and not there, in the title.

I stopped doing night rides. It just wasn't worth the risk for me. Car drivers seem to have trouble enough seeing me even in broad daylight.

i'll use some flashies to get me through dusk, but i don't enjoy riding in the utter darkness, even with decent lighting.

I actually feel safer riding at night. Riders can overlook you in the day time but it's hard to not see blinkies and bright headlights.

rode a 38mi ride last half of which was in the dark, as my first true night ride. absolutely great. the air feels clean; ditto the above, if you have good lights you are more visible than during day. in process of testing/upgrading light system, test ride had wires dangling around to helmet mount and was somewhat annoying. but anticipating more future stellar night rides.

I haven't started the night rides yet, but the after-work rides are ending in shadows now. I've mounted the headlight and a couple of tail lights to check them out and be ready when we lose Daylight Savings time.

Not quite that desolate, but Fort Worth is kinda like that in the middle of the city.

Same here, on weekdays I have a short ride after work and before I set off the sun has already set It's only going to get darker from now onwards...

I have an older version of this:
https://www.google.co.uk/products/cat...d=0CFgQ8wIwAA#

Plenty bright enough and a ridiculous battery life. I get much more than 50 hours out of mine and that's in cold, wet weather often.

I work quite long hours so a lot of my riding is at night (i.e. home from work), though admittedly the route is generally well-lit by street lamps.

I avoid riding at night but if school end at 5:30 and I get home at 7:00 there's nothing I can do about it. It is quite fun and sometimes find some people to join their group rides in.

A guy in our group uses one on his helmet and every time you talk to him he turns and blinds you!! Not cool.

I do most of my rides at night due to the heat here... Always alone, and most every ride I come across a deer in the road...
