Wheelsets for big boys
I'm about 215 lbs and I run a Krysrium elite wheelset and have had no problems with them and plan to keep them as a training set. I'm looking for a set of race wheels. The races I do are triathlons: oly & half (25-56 miles). I've looked at a few: Zipp (but I don't really understand the difference between the different types) Hed-3, and Mavic Cosmic (or cosmos, I don't remember which one, but I mean the race version not the cheap version). The wheels will go on a Felt F30 road-bike with shorty aerobars if that makes any difference, and I'm looking at 700c for compatibility.
My ability level is such that for an OLY I typically average 19 mph over the 25 miles. I hope to run 19 mph for my half next summer, but most of that will come from training, not wheels.
So now that I think I've covered the background issues, here are my questions:
1: Which of these weelsets is going to handle my weight? I plan to switch to the race wheelset before the race for 30 miles or so to make sure everything is in line and for the race but not on a regular basis.
2: What is the difference between tubular/clinchers in terms of performance? I've never used tubulars, so if there is not siginificant performance advantage I think I'd prefer to stick with what I know.
3: Is it even worthwhile for me to consider this purchase? (My budget is 1000-1500, but obviously I prefer less).
I know you can't pick my wheels for me, but hopefully you can help me become more educated about my options. Thanks.
