Hit By Car Pushed off Road

It has been bound to happen, I guess. Ive been riding a road bike +25 years and have had my share of close calls this is the first time I have actually been hit by a moving car . Luckily I was not run over but thrown off the bike and down the road. I bounced along and got scraped up and thought I might have broken my elbow and or hip. My butt is sore as can be and I also snapped my neck/neck head into the pavement. If I didnt have a helmet on I would have been toast. I was taken to the H xrayed and a CT test was given , nothing was found to be broken. I was given some painkillers, muscle relaxants and sent home with instructions to take it easy for a few weeks.

The driver was in front of me, slowed and moved to the right to take a diagonal parking spot and just never saw me. Luckily at the sound of the impact, my screaming, and smacking his car he pulled away. I went down hard, ended up in a semi fetal postion, had a loss of breath so when he came running up to me he was very apologetic , I think he thought he might have killed me. He called 911, held my head still and was very nice about the incident.

One funny thing, at the H in the trauma center, they didnt know how to unlock the lock on my Sidis. I was immobile and couldnt look down , and was trying to give instructions w/o looking . All that ended up happening was the shoes got tighter and tighter ! They were about ready to cut the shoes off , when, luckily someone came along who knew how to loosen them or it would have been another $350 down the drain. Moral, memorize instructions about unlocking the top strap !

I guess I suck, because I got just about the same time on a bike as you (started commuting in 1986) and I've been hit 3 times, 4 if you count a side-swipe, but I didn't fall so I guess I can't count it I can't even count the close calls

Or the drivers around you suck.

OP, glad you're alright and I'm glad the driver did the right thing.

Well I'm glad to say that each incident was the drivers fault and each happened in a different state.

Don't feel bad. I got hit by a semi 8 days ago and I'm still recovering. You might as well not apologize for others' stupidity.

The driver made an obvious mistake by hitting you, but at least the guy stopped and checked on you. Most people would have just done a hit-&-run not wanting to take responsibility for their actions. Being a bad driver is one thing, taking responsibility for it is another.

Back in college (1974- pre helmets), I was going down a steep hill in eastern CT. it was one of those brilliant sun dappled days where the shadows of leaves can obscure road imperfections. I was going 35- 40 mph with a car following me when I hit an unseen pot hole was thrown into 3 or 4 somersaults, knocked partially out and suffered road rash and cuts that were quite extensive. The car never stopped. I could never understand what kind of driver could witness a very bad wreck and just drive away.

    Glad you're ok OP.

This guy was a good guy, he stopped , called 911 ,apologized, helped hold my head still , waited for the ambulance . Stuff happens so I dont hold a grudge against him. However if, when I get my hands on the accident report, he blames me , then I' ll feel different.

    I see a cross-marketing opportunity for RoadID...

    Glad you're (relatively) OK.

Glad to hear it was no worse than that. Sounds like the other driver did all the right things. Good for him. I wish you a speedy recovery.

I'm glad that you could find something amusing about the situation; that was a pretty funny scene to picture! Of course it's more important that you weren't hurt too badly, you should have a complete recovery, and that the driver stopped to do the right thing. Hopefully the driver's insurance will cover all of the repairs for your bike, and you'll be back in the saddle soon again.

I HATE riding on busy streets that have diagonal parking. It's very dangerous. But I guess I don't have to tell you that.

Good to hear the humor in it and your OK.

I got hit twice and now ride a boring as hell 2.7 mile loop 10 x's in a residential neighborhood. It takes me 3 miles of main road to get there but worth it.

Glad you're ok. You can get replacement sidi straps for not much if they did have to cut them. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...x?ModelID=8519
