Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What are the benefits of Ultegra vs. 105?

Hello everyone,

I'm upgrading my road bike piece by piece. I have a '03 Fuji Finest AL (bought as NOS at local PBS at a great price) that came outfitted with Sora components.

I've replaced my shifters/brakes with Ultegra, rear cassette is now Ultega 9spd, Ultegra chain, and a Ultegra rear derrailleur. (The original fork already bit the dust in favor of cf, the saddle was replaced with a PBS Forte Pro SLX-great for someone with a bad back.)

The next parts to replace will be the crank/BB and front derrailleur.

So my question is, what is the major difference (other than price at this time) between the Ultegra/105 cranks, and the front derrailleurs? Is there any noticable difference between the two in performance (smoothness of shifting etc.)?

Also as an aside, I also intend to upgrade my brakes, and pretty much had the same question.

I appreciate any and all input from forum members!

without a doubt go with the ultegra crank and bb. there isn't enough price difference to even question it. as far as brakes, you could probly get by with the 105's and not notice but you might as well make an all ultegra kit.

Yes, but piece by piece keeps the wife from "Bobbiting" me in my sleep.

No opinion on the crank but I'd say the FD is a same-same. Both will be fairly smooth and the weight difference isn't very much.

I upgraded my wife's from Tiagra to Ultegra only because the shop didn't have a 105...the Ultegra cost me $40...I can't imagine the 105 would have been much less. You should be good either way.

As for brakes, I would do some searching on the quality.

I am currently going through a similar process with my bike. I picked up an ultegra rear cassette (23) and I am going with a compact crank in the front - probably FSA.

I asked my shop and they said the front D is really no difference and the brake difference is negligable between the two unless you are seriously counting g's... then go to Dura!

Nah, she just needs more indoctrination, err-uh, education.

I had been lurking here for a while when she brought up that she wanted a bicycle from Wal****.

After reading all the posts here on department store bikes, I was able to convince her otherwise and took her to the shop and got her a Fuji Crosstown just for cruising around.

I will wear her down more in the future though!
