Just wanted to share because I know a lot of us are always waiting for good deals to come around on decent bike gear.

Do people like the "boa" laces ?
I like my old 3 velcro straps because I can tighten down the ankle strap a lot, middle strap medium, but leave the toe strap loose for my fat toes to move. I assume that wouldn't work with boa.

They've got several models of Lake shoes with the heel-mounted BOA in the rotation right now. The 330, the 236, and the 170 have all come up dozens of times in the last 2 months, and they still have several sizes left in all 3 of them I think.

I picked up a pair of the 236, great shoes, really like the heel-mounted BOA system.


The BOA system is awesome. I find it easier to get just right than it was with 3 straps. Just wiggle your foot and loosen the area you want looser as you're tightening the shoe down, and it kindof self adjusts. I end up with them set exactly as you mention just by moving my toes around a lot while tightening down the wheel. The slack goes where it needs to be, at least for me.

The only boas I'll use are dual zone boas for snowboard boots. I'm with you on bike shoes. I like the toes loose and the ankle tighter. With boas, if the fit isn't perfect, it never will be. I'd never get shoes without trying them on first anyway.

Speedplay only. They have those, and traditional 3-hole shoes. The 170 shoes can take both 3-hole and 2-hole cleats, but isn't a carbon sole.

Oh well. Looks like it'd be a pain in the ass to walk in, anyway. My carbon shoes are very comfortable (especially climbing), but I can't possibly carry enough water on long mountain rides, so I bring a purifier, lay the bike down, and pull more out of streams I pass. Need to be able to walk over rough ground to do it.

But the rains are starting, and I could use another pair of bike shoes, to make sure I always have dry ones when I need them.

That's why Specialized S-works shoes have a "dual zone" BOA system. 2 BOA dials. One for your ankle and the other for the top of your foot and toes. I have them, but can't say for sure it's that beneficial over a single BOA dial.

Boas definitely kick ass. Those particular shoes, I'm not as convinced.

I've been on CX330C for 3 years, they are awesome. The white leather is getting a little long in the tooth but really can't justify updating them 'just because'. I would of jumped on these in a second @ bonktown prices though.

-Kangaroo leather is awesome. No break-in, no joke.

I purchased the Speedplay only 330's from Bonk a few weeks ago. They replaced a set of 07 S-Works. The stout Speedplay specific carbon soul completely eliminated hot spot under the pedal which was a slight issue with the Specialized. It spreads the weight out to a larger area and along with a carbon sole at least as stiff as the S-Works, it is a great shoes if you have Speedplay pedals.

But it is true that you need to try on shoes. Thankfully, Bonk has a great return policy. It is very easy. I actually ordered 5 pair of shoes. 2 Mavic's and 3 Lakes. I tried them all and kept the 330's. They even paid return shipping.

Anyone know how the width compares on normal (not the wide sizes) Lakes vs normal Shimanos?

Can't say with respect to Shimano, but my normal-width CX330C's are wider, and much more comfortable, than my non-Mega Sidi's. They are also just a tiny bit wider than my Diadora's, which I wear during the winter. For sake of comparison, I wear a US size 12E in most anything, and my size 47 Lake's are perfect for me.

When I wear out my current pair of CX330's (which they show no sign of doing, after two years of use), I'll happily buy another pair.

I have the specialized shoes with a velcro stap in the front and a boa lace in the back. I am not happy with the boa lace. I tried on a pair of SIDI Genius Mega last weekend and the SIDI system was much better. I am now saving to get a SIDI Mega in my size (43.5).

I have the 236 which I guess are a step down and paid $30 more. I love these shoes and can only imagine the step up would be even better with the kangaroo leather. Don't need another pair, but if I see that price again might have to jump on them - maybe a size up for thinker socks and use them for winter.
