Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hurt myself today...

Pardon if it's been posted already, but this is a timely video for me as I am
recovering from a leg injury and damn...this helps heal the mind some.
Everyday I literally "hurt" myself (in therapy) in order to heal myself.

For any of you that are recovering from anything
(physical, emotional, mental, etc...),
have a look and meditate a bit.

Song: "Hurt"

Yeah, and Johnny Cash just outright took possession of that song.

His video of that song is interesting too. When he recorded that cover and made this video he was dying and knew it.

The great man in black...Johnny Cash. I have it on my Ipod and listen to it when I ride occassionally and reminds me of all the greats that have passed including the Thomas Edison of our time...the guy who gave us the Ipod, Steve Jobs.
Johnny Cash had tremendous emphathy for the down trodden and underclass recognizing that circumstances in life can swing the balance dramatically. A very thoughtful man. I love what he sang about his empire of dirt aka all the success he had achieved in the end being so meaningless...he only wanted his wife and friends that he lost and loved back.
Wishing you a quick recovery 2ndGen...

That is, without a doubt, one of the best music videos of all time.

God bless Johnny Cash.

A bit of strectch to draw a parallel between a Trent Reznor song about addiction and the downward spiral it typically brings vs. pushing yourself to the limit at very highest level of cycling but still a cool video. I think Johnny Cash did an oustanding cover of Hurt given his own struggles with addiction and the pain and sorrow it inevitably brings.

I'm no Lance fanboy, but that TT stage when he catches Ullrich (clip starts at 2:28) is awesome - - you can see the slight turn of Ullrich's head as Lance comes alongside into his field of view. That little turn of Ullrich's head is one of those subtle yet great moments of cycling in the '00s - I'd say more-so than 'the look.'

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect... it is the best music video of all time. The most powerful song by one of my favorite artists. I still miss him, as does everyone who loves and appreciates great modern music.

For me, there is one video that I place above Cash's version of Hurt. It's Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. The band recorded the video on what happened to be my 18th birthday. Less than one month after taping that video, Ian Curtis--the band's vocalist and primary songwriter--would hang himself. Although Joy Division only released a few albums' worth of material, I consider their work to be some of most important post-punk material ever recorded. Curtis--who suffered from epilepsy--would often suffer seizures during concerts, and yet, he still took the stage. Sadly, Curtis' suicide came before the band ever toured the US. The closest I've come to seeing Joy Division's music performed live was when Peter Hook (JD's bassist, and former bassist for New Order) performed the band's Unknown Pleasures album in its entirety. It was probably the most memorable concert I've ever witnessed.

Yes, Johnny took possession of Hurt and made it his own (even Trent recognized that).
Thanks to Trent for writing it (very honest and courageous) and to Johnny for adding his flavor to it. RIP

Unless...you're addicted to cycling.

Not me either.

A) I only drink Bustelo (for men with hair on their chest) and
B) I dare someone to mock me in my shorts.

For anyone with an interest in this, the movie Control shows the spiral, does a very good job with the music, and was produced by Curtis's widow.

It's a good movie, as is the book that it's based upon. Also worth reading is Lindsay Reade's Torn Apart.

Johnny's stuff towards the end was amazingly powerful. 'Hurt' is awesome. This is right up there with it to me:

Also, have you seen The Johnny Cash Project? That's a real trip and another REALLY powerful song. I found myself singing it on my commute into work this morning actually. "Ain't know grave, gonna hold my body down."
