Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If it "had to be" one bike for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

If it had to last the rest of my life with me getting older it would probably be a Lynskey Helix.

A cyclocross bike because it is versatile for multiple uses- off road, road, commuting, etc.

Not a very "Road Cycling" answer, but it's true. Superlight rigid steel MTB if I could only have one bike. Why? Pretty good on the trails and pretty good on the road. I'd have to think long and hard between this and a CX, but I think I'd go rigid MTB with at least two sets of wheels.

Forum-fitting answer? I'm pretty stoked with my Pinarello. To the grave! Why? because I like it.

A lot of metal here.
If it had to be a "forever" bike,
I think it'd have to be steel or titanium.

"We are just men, not gods, not giants, just men.
And the secret of steel has always carried with it a mystery.
You must learn its riddle, Conan, you must learn its discipline,
for no one, no one in this world can you trust, not men, not women, not beasts...
This you can trust.
"

The 78 Colnago Super I had. If I could get it back, I wouldn't let go of it again. The only reason I don't pine over it more, is because I enjoy riding so much that I can get by with my cheap bikes for the next few years. They are good, but they are no Colnago. Lesson learned. When I upgrade, I will buy a totl CF race bike, and I might keep that forever.

It would be a steel bike. I love the performance of my new Scott Addict R1 and I love the way it looks - absolutely love it, but I grew up riding/racing steel. Something about steel is timeless and classical. There's a romance, for lack of a better word, that steel has that carbon fiber doesn't. Steel is the beautiful wife, Carbon the hot mistress.

under what circumstances would you have to have only one bike ?What about n+1?
Need good road bike. Need good mountain bike. Maybe we could say what if you could only have one bike of a category?
Then it'd be a sunny weather roadie, a rain bike, a moab style mtn bike, a mud fest mtn bike, a tri bike, a tt bike, a TdF bike and one for the occasional friend who likes to come along, and we're back to where we are today with n+1 bikes and all is good. Feel free to add categories...
