Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I actually mount my camera(s) on my bike, or rather bike rack. As discussed here, I use two cameras: a Nikon D7000 and a smaller Olympus Camedia C-560.

To attach cameras, I have an old flash bracket zip-tied to the front rack. I also use a Manfrotto monopod for over-the shoulder views, and to use the bike as a kind of dolly, to get shots such as those in the video on this page.

I prefer the camera positions I can get in this way, rather than the common helmet-mounted views. Stabilization is still an issue, but I'm actually surprised how good the results are.

I'm planning to experiment with more DIY mounting brackets.

Yup, lots of people watch my videos, particularly my "VeloGarage" tutorials. One of those recently cracked the 50,000 view mark on YouTube.

Tip: Don't run rock hard tires for on-bike shots.

I really need to get a (some) camera(s) to play with this! Cool.

Re: Wind Noise ... seems like the problem is that you need a wind sock for the mic. These guys have done some modifications which seem to solve their problem (https://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=664505). It'd be easy to solve if the camera in use had a factory external mic input (and this is a common problem, see, e.g., the different solutions available for mics in general: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search...tialSearch=yes).

This guy has a step-by-step for adding an external mic port to a ContourHD; once you have an external mic its easy enough to get a mic with a wind sock (see B&H link above): https://www.bcsportbikes.com/forum/sh...ernal-Mic-Hack

My ContourHD is still under warranty, so I'm not tearing into it. Too bad the Contour+ is $500. It comes with an external mic jack.

Hi, I just picked up a Contour HD 1080p from bestbuy for $100 - I will be using this for my daily commute to work.

The form factor is great and i'm planning to mount it on my handlebar. I've been searching but can't find the answer to the water resistency of the unit. I know it says it is water resistant on the box, but how water resistant? I want to use it when it is raining and snowing as well. Does anyone have personal experience on this? Is it resistant enough?

It'll record but you'll have to let it dry out. My first camera I wore in a soaking wet race. I made the mistake of leaving it in the car and I couldn't record the next day. It worked fine but there was moisture in the lens so no picture (it was a very damp day where the sun eventually came out). I brought it inside that second evening and it was dry the next morning. Used it afterward no problem, still use it now.

I'd get the external case if you were using it daily in the rain/snow. I just got a couple, literally opened the boxes a couple hours ago. No idea on how they work yet.

I wanted to love the replayxd1080 but the battery life is awful. I don't even do marathon sessions, and it isn't enough for me.

OK, the comments by you and Rimmer on battery life (yours) and video quality (his) were useful to me. One of the real attractions to me was that the lens gave less distortion than evident on the other two contenders.

Thanks.

I have a question about Go Pro, Is there an open shutter mode? Meaning, if I were in a cave, would it be possible to take a multiple exposure shot like you could on a standard camera?

Usually when we are caving, we will cover the lens as we move around and flash slaves to get more imagery in the shot. I know it's digital, but is this possible?

I love my ContourHD camera. Rode 4 hours during a hurricane and works perfect.

The ContourHD is my camera of choice for helmet use. For everything else I prefer my GoPro HD Hero 960, since it has better quality video and audio.

I really like the GoPro on the "Chesty" chest strap mount. It lets the viewer see the rider's arms and the handlebars, which is pretty cool. You can see when the rider shifts and brakes.

Before I started posting ride videos last year, a BF poster who doesn't like natural sound on ride videos referred to heavy breathing as "porno breathing". Of course that just made me laugh my ass off! When I'm editing these videos after the ride while still under the influence of endorphins I laugh even more!

My Samsung F50 only weighs 8 ounces and with a class 10 card provides awesome video. $120 at the right store. Had to get a helmet mount from DealExtreme, but that only cost me $5 and two weeks of waiting. If I could afford a GoPro, I'd get it, but with two kids in college, you get what you can get.

A friend of mine bought a ContourGPS this week, we didn't tried it yet, but is the GPS working great? (He didn't really mind because he had a deal : 150$ tax included, + 2 16gb microSD cards, + waterproof case + some other useful things...)

I saw it can mix the video with some map, speed, elevation, etc... Anyone tried it?

Contour+ image quality lower than ContourHD. We can't read the racers' numbers on the +, we can on the HD. 720@60fps both. When I get a chance I'll contact Contour and see what I can do.
