The only real problem traffic I encountered on the BRP was in Asheville between US 25 and US 74. The locals use it as a high speed shortcut in their commute.

And yes the threat is probably over-blown but it seems instead of encouraging cycling the proposal would try to encourage more auto traffic.

There is some superb riding possibilities in SW VA. I had occasional rides out of Bristol to Abingdon and west of there and really loved it. Nice roads and nice scenery. People were real nice too.

I know, I live here, and I was a Park Ranger on the Parkway.. Yes you can ride on the parkway, just not off the road. No mountain biking on hiking trails. You can ride on the road all you want. If you take a large group, or have an organized event that wants/needs to use a portion of the Parkway, you will need a permit, but that's relatively easy to get. Good luck, and enjoy the ride, it's beautiful up here this time of year.

I live in the New River Valley, very close to the Parkway, I've ridden sections of it around Roankoe, VA. Great riding, although the motor traffic is fast moving and plentiful. I doubt they will close it to cyclists because it is so popular in the area. That being said I can't see the government making it any more cycling friendly as motor vehicles are by far the most popular users of the parkway. Your average person just doesn't possess the physical fitness to tackle the climbs on the parkway, therefore the amount of cyclists is a minority.

If you want to ride the Parkway, sign up for Storming Of Thunder Ridge next month. Go look at the website and get signed up! It kicked my butt last year but I'm going to beat it this year. It is a great ride. Very well organized.

Getting back to the original topic:
A loose coalition of bike and other outdoor enthusiasts, tourism concerns, and chambers of commerce worked to stall the new Draft Management Plan until after Phil Francis' retirement, which was April 1.
We look forward to new management making the Parkway more welcoming to cyclists. This is important to Virginians not just for local recreational use, but for cyclists who come from all over the world -- bringing their tourism dollars to Appalachian communities that could really use the business.
