Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheel Rec For My New Steel Bike

I've purchased the bike in the pic and need a recommendation for a set of wheels.

Given that it's handmade and steel lugged, I was thinking a silver high-spoke count wheel of some sort. The builder recommended a set of Mavic Elites in silver but I already have a set of Equipes which is just one step below the Elites.

I have a set of Fulcrums Racing 1s and a set of SRAM S60s but I don't think either of those will look great. This will not be a racing bike and used primarily on long rides here in the flats of Florida.

Cockpit is going to be a Ritchey Classic set-up and the saddle will be white.

Any thoughts on what to get? Budget of about $1000.

Thanks,

Jonathan

I'm having a custom frame build with Ritchey Zeta wheels. The spoke count isn't so high, but they have a nice classic look. I saw them on a Jamis Eclipse and they looked pretty good.

with a pretty custom frame like that i'd go with handbuilt velocity A23s or whatever shallow rims you prefer, high spoke lacing, and matching orange chris king hubs

I also have wheelset built on Dura Ace hubs, too. They are nice and good if you want something quite.

I like the WI hubs. Lace them to some nice box section or low-profile rims (I like Ambrosio Excellight SSC rims) with silver spokes & nipples. Radial front, 3x rear. Classic look to go with your frame & bombproof.
