Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That would make a very sweet winter beater. Definitely looks worth the price.

I rode that frame as a rental bike in Florida one spring break. It rode fine, but it was fairly stiff and unforgiving if I recall correctly. For a winter beater it should be great. Put some 25mm tires on it to soften the ride a bit and you are good to go.

I vote no. I had a similar GT before with Forte carbon fork. Nothing really stood out. Do you already have spare parts laying around to finish the build?

Did you read his post? It's going to be a winter beater. He doesn't need it to stand out, he just needs it to work and not rust over on him.

I say do it.

Looks good for a winter beater, but is a bit pricey for what appears to be a 10 year old frame. Offer $140 or see to see if they bite. It appears to be in good shape in the pics, but who knows if the bike's being ridden "until a year ago," means 9 or 10 years of usage.

Those pop up on ebay pretty regularly, one had a buy it now for $90 shipped and it sat for weeks. I'd offer him/her a $100 for it.

I have one of these, like about it's a great winter beater, stiff rider. Check around the headset, I decommissioned mine after noticing a few stress cracks in the area, I plan to cut it up and make a wind chime out of it.

Good stuff to know. I would have offered lower but I was the one who said 160. For a front fork and bars I thought it was worth it.

Also madfx: Good to know about the headset, I will check that.

Although on the note of ride quality would you qualify the bike as a more "relaxed" geometry or a "race" geometry?

"Or", you could buy a brand new modern frame & fork with a warranty.

The "triple triangle" design that GT used then was, as is mentioned, very stiff. I had one of the MTB frames and it was great due to that same stiffness, but I could see where it might be a bit harsh in a road version. I feel like the price is a little high as you could likely find a whole bike of similar vintage for very little more money.

So on the note of getting a better deal i came across this schwinn katana for 275. Full bike, better deal then the GT? How would you compare the frames really?

Pictures later
