Medrol dose pak and riding, (Methyprednisone)
My Dr started me on a Medrol dose pack for bursitis today. It's the regular 24,20,16, etc... I've read a lot about muscle weakness, glucose uptake and other problems. I was planning some long rides the next three days. Anyone have any experiance with riding while on glucocortical steroids?

did you perhaps ask your doctor and see what he has to say about it, seeing as he is your doctor and he put you on the meds?

If you're only taking glucocorticoids for a short period of time (i.e., less than a month), you should be fine. If you're relatively young and fit to start out, you won't suddenly be bonking after a few miles or anything like that.

I had to take this stuff a while back and I personally did not like working out at all with it. It made my heart feel like it was going super fast when I was just sitting there doing nothing.

I went through one of those paks years ago. I read about the side effects, one of whichwas psychosis - I thought, "yeah right!" Darned if I wasn't plotting world dominationby the second day. Stuff threw me for aloop!

You'll be fine. Depending on where your bursitis is, that may slow you down more than the solu-medrol, but since you're asking this question, it's probably in your elbow anyway.

That's hilarious Farby. Thanks for all the advice. I'm gonna just go out and go for it. I was just making sure no one had any horror stories about it.

This reflects my experience, too. You may notice nothing, and if you do, what can you do? You wouldn't be taking the medication if you didn't need it.

Having taken a Medrol dose pack earlier this year to help with sciatica from a herniated disc, I can tell you that my experience was very positive. No side effects and because the inflammation went down, the pain did also. This was in the week leading up to RAGBRAI. I did almost 500 miles of riding that week and had no discomfort. Without the medicine, I may not have ridden at all. Ok, the not riding part is probably not true. It would have been more painful, but I'd have ridden anyway.

The normal side effects of longer term use should be noted. It shouldn't supress your HPTA due to the initial high dose, then taper. But just note after tapering off, or during, any issues to have related to corticosteroid use.

Well I made 70 miles on it. (Day 2 of the pack). I did notice I burned quicker on sprints and climbs. I just backed off some. I did also notice that my energy reserves fell off significantly after the 2 hour mark. Once I got into the fat burn I was OK, but the first few minutes after any stops were murder. I assume that my muscle glycogen was burned and the Medrol was limiting the blood glucose uptake. I'm also more worn out now. It was worth it though.
