Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rival or Ultegra?

So I'm having to replace my front derailleur and not sure what to go with. I have Rival on the rest of the bike but had an Ultegra front dérailleur, which I am having to replace. I used the Ultegra because I had it when I had the bike built. Is there an advantage of one over the other?

If the Ultegra worked before stick with it. One of my bikes is not SRAM friendly when it comes to the front derailleur, the other bike SRAM works fine on. In other words, why change something that works just to risk having problems.

It's a front derailleur, who cares? Not trying to be a d i ck but how many times are you going back and forth?

I am an all same components kinda guy. On my last build I sold a DA fd for the same price to buy an Ultegra one just to match.

I have had no issues with my Rival FD. I would match and save a few dollars.

Why do you need to replace the fd, anyway?

My chain broke and somehow caught on the front derailleur and bent it. I tried to straighten it out but still not working right. Since I'm going to have to replace it just wondering if there is are any performance reasons not to use rival. I personally don't know how much difference there can be. But I've read both good and bad reviews, as usual, just looking for opinions from people having used both.

And for those who don't care, don't comment because you do come off as being a d I c k.

you can put a Shimano FD on a SRAM group. lots of people do this with success and it improves the front shifting.

For me, Ultegra FD shifting on Ultegra chainrings is a lot crisper than Red FD shifting on Red chainrings. Not sure if it's 100% applicable to OP's situation, but that's my 2 cents... Also a fan of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"...

Edited to add: As noted below, my experience may not be applicable as I have the Ti Red FD.

It might improve the shifting over the Red FD, however I have not experienced or heard improvement over Rival.

this is a good question, not much goes wrong with FD's, in my experience. as for which to buy, either will work just fine.

I have a Force FD on one bike and a Dura Ace FD on the other, They both shift the same with Red shifters. I'd go with whatever one is cheaper.
