Velo Orange Compact Double 34x48 vs Sugino Alpina 34x48
I was all set to buy the Sugino from VO but then they sold out and it looks like they are no longer stocking it. VO has their own compact double that looks pretty good and the price is great: $100.00. The crankset will go on my '92 Davidson, which I am upgrading to a 9-speed.
Anyone know about the VO crank?

I just went through the exact scenario. I bought the VO crank and I'm very happy with it for the price. It's certainly not as well machined as a high end Shimano crank, for example, but it's perfectly serviceable and looks great.
I find the shifting excellent, though to be honest I'm using it with a DT shifter.

If you're not set on a square taper interface (or 48t outer ring), you can pick up Shimano RD-R4550 cranksets pretty cheaply. I used to run Suginos on my bikes, but find that I prefer the aforementioned Shimanos.

Whoa, 3 DT shifter enthusiasts on one thread. Are we in the wrong forum.
Jan Heine had a review of the VO crank and while he gave it high marks for performance he, as I remember, felt it was made of a lower grade alum. which was prone to micro cracking.
I put the Sugino 48/34 on my COHO and love it.

I've got one of the 4550s from my first road bike, and was thinking about putting it on my '97 Bianchi. I'm just concerned that it'd look out of place with the old style steel frame.

Those Campy derailleurs shift really well on compact doubles. I've used them on 36/46, 34/46, and even 26/36/46 setups. You can usually find them on eBay for around $25 (braze-on, so you'll need an adapter).

Isn't the Alpina the same as the XD just polished?
There's lots of XD's out there. QBP sells the triples and doubles.
