Is this bike a deal?
Or a joke?

Looks pretty sweet to me and I think it would really good with some red tires and bar tape. Assembly isn't an issue as my friend is rather handy with bikes and I'll take it to my LBS to get it fine tuned and fitted if need be. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about the quality of the frame and stuff. Looking to upgrade my Raleigh Sport with Shimano 2300 components. I've tested the SRAM stuff at my LBS and really like it, but with a baby on the way I can't really afford $2,000+ to get me a fancy Specialized. I'm also kind of digging the fact this bike is devoid of any stickers and stuff. Looks real clean.
Lastly, would anyone have any insight as to which "famous maker" this frame belongs to? I do realize most probably come from the same Chinese factories.

I have built two bikes from Nashbar bare frames, which are different geometry than this, but if same manufacturer, they are a fine frame. Personally, I think the Rival for $1000 is a better deal (if a Rival groupset is $750, you get everything else for $250, vs Force groupset being $950, you pay $400 for the same stuff). And orange is faster.

I'd say it's a great bike for the money, but it would be worth upgrading the frame and wheelset. I'd buy the bike, sell the frame and components I didn't need, and save up for a frame with a design that's ideal for me. Not necessarily a high-modulus carbon fiber frame that weighs more than 800 grams though. A nice aluminum frame would be fine.
I say the frame isn't qualified for the components because it doesn't have many modern technology applied like press-fit bottom bracket systems, a tapered head tube, and the tube shaping doesn't have much focus either. Examples: thin chainstays, straight seat stays, small diameter seat tube. Those things all effect the ride quality.

its a joke. Nashbar is like the Onion of the cycling world; in fact, they have been doing since the catalog-only days of waaay back.
if you read the print in the specs, it even lists it as a joke.

For $1,400 I would do a custom build and buy everything on eBay. You can find a nice frame, Specialized or whatever brand you desire, purchase your components and everything to your taste. I would buy the cassette, chain, and crankset brand new, and maybe the other things used.
If you're not a wrench-type then bring it all in a box to your LBS. You will have a product that is your own creation and you will learn a good amount that will help you in the future. Be sure and get proper size and have at least a basic fit done at completion.
All the best!

I don't really get what's so terrible about it. Because there's no branding on the frame? What's so bad about the spec sheet?

I saw the Famous Maker bikes at Performance before xmas. They looked OK to me. This bike seems to be the equivalent of a Bikesdirect bike: no name frame, brand name components. I don't know what bikes to recommend in that price range, but I doubt you'll get 105 components at that price at your LBS. Since you are looking at online purchase, why not look at the bikes at BD? There are a few BD bikes that people seem to like.

buy it, if you don't like how it rides, just put the gruppo on a steel or carbon frame when you can the equpiment on the frame alone costs almost what the whole bike does
