Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2009 Cannondale BBQ CAAD9-7

Greetings and salutations gents!

My first post here, but enough about me!

Here's my spanking brand new 2009 Cannondale CAAD9-7:

+'s
Stock reads Vittoria Zaffiro Tires. I got a set of Maxxis Xenith tires. Nice.
And instead of the stock Sora Fr Der, it came with a Tiagra Front Derailleur.

The stock FSA Vero Crankset never saw the light of day.
I immediately had a brand new Ultegra SL Crankset with a
Dura Ace 7800 Bottom Bracket and my Wellgo GR8 Pedals.

I used to have an '09 Trek 1.5 that I loved (and still do), but I outgrew it.
The CAAD9 is eons better. It is just superior for how I ride.

I knew a CAAD9 would be my next bike and I danced between an '09 and a BB30 '10,
but then, I'd have to buy just a frameset because for me, only one color will do for a
CAAD...BBQ and I wasn't ready for a $3K CAAD9-1 and I'm not a SRAM guy (to get a 9-4).
Plus, I wanted to build my CAAD (The Brits are lucky...they get the CAAD9 Ultegra).

I hunted down an '09 leftover still in a box in the basement of an LBS and snatched it up.

L-U-C-K-Y!
BBQ and in my size!
And best of all...local.
The fact that I got it for $190. below MSRP was also nice.
And FTW! I got one of the last of the Handmade in The U.S.A. frames.
Sah-wheet.

Have a Bontrager XXX Race Lite OS Stem and Fi'zi:k Micro Tex Tape & Gel
ready to go on it, but only after I get my FSA K-Wing Compact Bar.

Further upgrades in the wings:
Fi'zi:k Aliante Carbon Saddle
Deda Superzero Post (if it fits)
BWW Blackset Race Wheels
Continental Grand Prix 4000S Tires
Swiss Stop Brake Pads
Dura Ace 7800 Pedals

Either used Dura Ace 7800 components or a new
Ultegra SL groupset and possibly an Edge Fork.

____________________________________________________________________________

Update: 02/28/12
Build Cost:
$4215. - OEM parts sold off $215. =$4000.

(Still have from original bike: OEM Tiagra front derailleur, seat post clamp, Maxxis Xenith tires, Ultra fork,
Mavic CXP22 wheelset, seat post, brakeset worth about $300. I will be putting these items on my SE Racing
Lager SS. I also have some upgrade parts that I did'nt go with after all including a set of Ultegra SL & Dura-Ace
7800 Chainrings, Dura-Ace 7801 Chain, Bontrager XXX Race Lite OS Stem.)

Weight:
7200g/15.87lbs

It still does...I'm looking at picking up an FSA bar next week so I can set up the cockpit.

Actually, the stock CDale bar is way better than my stock Trek's Bonty bar.
I like the ergo shape, but the FSA is going on.

In case anybody hasn't noticed yet, I'm putting all the money into the transferable contact points first
(parts I can swap to the next bike in areas I'd have direct contact with; pedals, saddle, bar, tires, brakes).

But this'll be my rig for the summer. If all goes well enough, I'll get something plastic in the Autumn.

Thank you.

It's such a simple beautiful frame.
It's understated (the opposite of my '09 Trek 1.5).
I was actually going to paint my Trek black, but in the end,
it would still just be a good entry-level bike.
The CAAD9 is another story.

The CAAD9 is definitely a better frame to build up.

I outgrew the Trek. It's a great bike, but I needed more.
The CAAD9 fits the bill very well.

The bar tape and the seat. Yuck.
Can't wait for my Fizik Saddle and FSA Bar.

But! I have to say, "as is", this bike is a major improvement over my Trek.
The Trek beat it in the 2009 Bicycling Entry Level Bike shootout and for the
category, it was the appropriate choice, but for someone who wants to get
a little more serious about their riding or for someone like me who is an
aggressive rider (tossing a bike about, hammering it, etc...), the CAAD rules.

The saddle is way better than my Trek Bonty.
That saddle really limited my riding.
I'd give the nod to the Trek for smoothness
(it was nicely stiff, but at the limit, I'd take the CAAD9 any day.
I take turns faster, I hammer it and the bike just launches me forward.

I also have to give the Trek the + on their handlebar tape.
It was good compared to any tape (even the high end stuff).

It is what it is...The Cannondale is a better product.

Honestly, the CAAD9 is a work of art (even when compared to higher end aluminum frames) and the quality is consistent.

The CAAD10 with all it's tapered tubing looks like it'll be an awesome frame.
Can't wait to see one, but again, I'm partial to the classic lines of the CAAD9 and I feel immensely
fortunate to have been able to get one before they stopped producing them especially in BBQ.

I'm impressed that you parted out for the higher regarded Dura-Ace components.

re: Deda Superzero seatpost
Got mine yesterday, put it on and went for a quick 2.5 hr ride. Looks like it held tight, but it might or might not have tilted about 3/32" or so. Was probably my rushing sighting the level. Will see for sure tomorrow.

I'm between the Deda, an FSA K-Force Lite and a Fizik Cyrano.

What post did you have before the Deda?

Does the Deda help out with the ride quality?

This is the Edge 2.0 I'm going for
(note how it closely it's graphics match the CAAD's).
They look like they were made for each other.

Thanks RD.

The last 2 pics aren't mine. Posted them for comparison.

But I'll have new pics of the CAAD up in the middle of the week once I start putting on the bits.

The Edge 2.0 is said to weight 350g and generally goes for around $400.
I won't be getting the fork until October.

Previous seatpost was a Specialized Roubaix carbon with the zertz elastomer device. Did not perceive any change in ride quality. I run a 7.5cm setback (to tip of saddle), and the Deda has the saddle rail maxed to the rear with a 73 degree STA. That's actually fine because the Deda clamp has good front-to-rear support, and it looks like you won't be pushed back as far with your setup.

I contacted Fizik about it being compatible with my carbon rails.
They assured me it would be fine.

I've read on WW's that the Deda comes in at about 205+ grams as composed to it's claimed 166g weight.

Have you weighed your Superzero?

If so, what did you get?
