Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What can you tell me about this CL find? "Peugeot Record Du Monde"

It's either this green thing for $200, or a Schwinn le tour for $160. Buying one this weekend, not sure which. It'll be my first roadbike, mainly for recreation but I have goals to be riding to school in the next month and riding to work by the end of the semester.

Obviously, for someone who knows little about the world of roadbikes, the flashier one with a bunch of listed specs is the right choice. But, as stated, I know little about all this. I've just always wanted a road bike, and after a years of cheap mountain bikes, it's time to get one.

So, what can you tell me about this one? Seem solid? This or the Schwinn for the price?

Thanks for your time helping a newbie.

I'm thinking about grabbing the Peugeot this weekend, it's just too damn sexy to pass up.

Sounds like they took care of it and kept everything in ace shape!

When I was in Europe I raced a PY-10 and absolutely loved Peugeot. Fantastic people to work with.

Just picked this one up a few weeks ago. Great bikes with the classic French ride. I wouldn't hesitate on the Peugeot.

Is it the right size for you ? No bike is good if it's the wrong size.
I don't see brake levers on the Peugeot. If not, factor that in the cost.
It might need other work too (like any used bike).

Check out the old catalogs at Bike Boom Peugeot. I'd say buy it if it fits and you like it. If it ends up that it sucks, you could probably sell off the original parts and not have much of a loss.

To judge by my '86, they're fine bikes.

Well, he hasn't emailed me back after two inquiries. Also, just now noticed that the ad is from January 25. Doesn't seem like great news.

Hopefully nobody noticed his post and he's still got it, but if not, ah well. The search goes on.

Found these as well...

Eh? Now that I've got you reeled in and all.

Think id pass on the Schwinn for that price but would go look at the other two and see if either fit you.
I'm not overly impressed with the Univega either but the Peugeot looks great. But its really about what fits you

Now, aside from getting fitted somewhere, I'm curious about how I know I've found a bike that fits me.

How would I decide such a thing by a test ride, simply put?

Sorry for the noobness of threadjacking my own thread over and over, but I'd rather not litter the boards with it.

Thanks for the reads and advice.

Myself I never go off numbers iv had a pro fitting a couple times and never felt right riding.
When I go to look at a bike I take tools with me. If the seller let's me I test the bike if it felt close ill let them know and say I would like to adjust the seat and stem and if it feels right then I buy it. I have a habit of doing that even if I know before adjusting because I want to make sure the seat post and stem are not frozen. Whenever a seller refuses to let me adjust I tell them sorry and leave.

What's up guys, I am the builder of the green Peugeot. The measurements i took may be off but I am 5'10 and the bike fits me (also i do not have strange proportions). Also, for anyone that didn't take the time to read the ad, the bike has bar end brakes and interrupters (which work rather well). I will post better pictures from the build here in a little while once i find the camera I took the pics with.

Hi welcome to BF. Sorry bout the proportions thing lol kinda happens tho.

I did point out the brake levers to others. I did read the ad bit it was hard to see in the pic so I blew it up and circled the lever

Well what are the odds. I'm Dakota, the one who's sent you a long email. More photos of the bike would be awesome, and if you'd still like to sell it please let me know. Very interested!

SPICE, you could give the "standover height" .... from the top tube down to the ground. Sometimes that is a better measurement with a horizontal top tubed bike, because there's less confusion about various methods of frame measurements.
