Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have 400ft elev gain over a 1/2 mile to get home. Try running/biking on 20+% rollers. Stfu. Htfu. etc. etc. Yadayadayada. "Mt."...you keep using that word but I do not think it means what you think it means.

That profile is fascinating. There's no other approach to your home? I'm at the end of a one mile long private road.

Also 'Mt.' is my nickname for this ridge, which in all fairness is officially Pine Hill, at least on the USGS survey maps.

Nah, that profile isn't my home, just my training area. My home is at the top of 400ft of elev gain tho and it's pretty much 400 from all sides. One street is in the 30% range and I'll avoid that one at all costs but for the most part it's 15-20% for me to get home...the last .2 mi is 25%. Great for hill repeats tho...

I lived on a similar hill in the 90s. It made me quit the sport. I couldn't possibly ride it every day.

I don't have such a climb to get home (I have a ridge to get over, but not really worth noting compared to the MOUNTAINS you guys have) but.... I almost always end my rides with about 8 miles into the teeth of the wind, typically 10 mph, often over 20.

I'll modify my "bump" description to "tough bump" and I agree 100% that a ride filled with 100'/mile of tough bumps is much worse than a ride with two tough climbs. As two oldsters on a tandem nothing induces under-the-breath cursing more than a ride that is 75% rollers and steep pitches make it all the worse. No rhythm, no chance for a breather, especially on a tandem where the upside is a crawl and you can't even catch your breath on the downside. Is this making too much sense for this forum?

Right, but don't forget we're talking Pcad here. There are only two places where he's funny - BF and when riding his bike.

For most of the last 5 years my local riding included any number of 400 to 2000 foot climbs, including a nasty 100+ fifth of a mile climb that ended each ride. Most of that was done with compact and 11 - 28 gearing, which was sufficient for my abilities. If I lived where you do, I'd change the entire rear end to be able to spin up those steep pitches. No need to blow the knees out at the end of a difficult ride. Our beleaguered hero u.m.d. rides most of his miles with a large cassette and long cage rear D for that very reason.
