Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2001 Cannondale r600, reasonable?

2001 Cannondale R600 CAAD4

Looking at a 2001 Cannondale r600 CAAD4 on craigslist, was hoping for this forum's opinion on if the price is fair or not, and based on the answer, whether I should pull the trigger or keep looking. I'm new to road bikes, and I'm not certain of what the street price was of this bike back in 2001. bikepedia shows the MSRP to be $1400 (bikepedia webpage) . Secondly, would this bike be appropriate for someone to get into more serious road cycling? I commute in Philadelphia and want to take my cycling to the next level. My budget is no more than $700. Thanks guys and gals, I appreciate all the feedback.

would you rather have that or this, brand new?

I'd keep looking, personally.

The seller is asking more than it's worth. Hold out for a better deal...

This is my personal opinion on what I would pay. If I wanted that 10 year old bike I'd offer him $450 and tell him to keep his cateye and clipless pedals. He would probably decline since he considers his bike to be "perfect" condition. If he really wanted to show how well he took care of his bike he wouldn't have used electrical tape on his bar tape.

There is another R600 in your area going for $475 but it has flat bars and probably isn't your size. It looks in better condition.

There are quite a few Treks in your area. I see a 1600 and a 2.1 . There is also a Pilot 5.0 size 56 for $900. Looks like 5600 105 and Dura Ace mix. Whisper sweet nothings in his ear and try to get it into your budget... maybe he can take off the cateye and aero bars.

$400... It's a good bike to start out on, if it fits you. I would never call a bike with duct tape on the grips "perfect condition"

Thanks for taking the time to research all that, I'll offer him what you said and see what happens. Would you mind taking a look at this listing and giving your opinion?bianchi giro

I have the same bike, black version, that I got in 2006 for $500 shipped from eBay. I had to replace the left brifter, but it came with a Dura-Ace RD. Taking into account inflation plus the fact that it's got pretty standard components (but still great components, just nothing flashy), I'd go for $400-$450 like other folks here.

Again, speaking from experience on the exact same frame, this bike definitely helped me transition to the next level in road biking. Keep your budget around $500 or less, though. No need to go over that if you're not racing for money as this CAAD4 or something similar will hold its own against newer, more expensive stuff. The aluminum in this series was dialed in quite nicely...low weight plus carbon fork plus wishbone seat stays make for a nice ride. I always feel like I'm switching from a Fiat to a BMW when I hang up my commuter and take the CAAD4 out for a weekend ride.

craigs list pricing varies a lot for city to city.
I bought a 99 CAAD 3 R800 for $450.00 3 years ago on craigs list. Much better shape than your bike. It did have a sticky STI shifter which freed up quickly. I sold it last year for $500.00 Great bike, really launched my serious road riding. My view on CL buying is to offer what I think is a fair price and then walkaway if the seller wants to justify his price. I bought 8 bikes on CL some I paid the asking price I thought it was fair, some I offered what I thought the bike was worth.

Bianchi Giro can you guys take a look at this bike and give your opinion as well? It's essentially the Bianchi equivalent of the cannondale, should I try for the same price?

That's also a 2001 but it's a bit nicer from what I can tell. If it's in great condition and needs no work at all then $650 is a fair price. If not then I'd offer $600 or even $550.

I got a very comparable cannondale for $100 a few years ago. Granted that was a deal, but it had 105 and everything as well..... if its over 10 years old, more than 50% the cost of the new version, i'd say its too much

I sold a good to excellent condition CAAD4 R300 in Miami recently for $350 after paying that same price for it a year prior, I'd say the step up to 105 from Tiagra gear between the 300 and the 600 should be worth another 50-100 $$ but no more than that.

Lemond Buenos AiresThanks for all the replies guys. What do you think of this one? Looks in decent condition, better components, and I like steel bikes. Winner?

This doesn't suck either- seems like you're looking in the 54-55cm size range.

With the extra money, you can get new wheels.

EDIT: while you're at it, go check this one out- there are a lot of discovery liveried treks, but some of them are worth a whole lot more than $700. https://southjersey.craigslist.org/bik/2927233768.html

And this one too- https://southjersey.craigslist.org/bik/2923969309.html

Yeah, check it out before someone else does. It's a 2003 LeMond Buenos Aires (Reynolds 853) w/ Ultegra.

Make sure it fits though... the Top Tube on these are usually longer than comparable sizes on other brands.

Agree with what everyone else is saying, 3/400$ range tops for the Cannondale , nice ride in its day but it's still 11+ years old.. That lemond is sweet!

Yeah, he already sold it.... too good to be true.

I found this guy today, and he definitely still has it. What do you guys think? Bianchi Reparto Corse

Damn, it was a nice bike.

The Bianchi is a good bike but I don't know much about campy and where Veloce falls in the lineup. Try asking in the Vintage forum as those guys know more about the type of bikes.
