Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Girl stepped up her bike swag

My girlfriend finally got her new bike. Went from an '11 Trek Lexa sora(read: heavy ass hog) to a '12 Madone 5.2 Ultegra. She loves the ride. It's responsive, it's light and it's sick looking! She's pretty competitive and hated getting dropped because her previous 9 speed was a pig and she just couldn't pedal hard enough to keep up. I didn't have my bike when I rode with her, I was on the shops test roubaix, but she was hammering and loving every second! Can't wait to put some mileage down with her!

Dude, seriously?

I'm happy that she got a new bike. Really. But you can't say that her 6 month old bike with Sora was a "pig" and needed to be replaced just so she could keep up with you. C'mon, man. Looks like you fell hook line and sinker for some advertising.

Congrats on the new bike though. That's a nice one. I just hope it lasts for more than 6 months!

feel fast, go fast. feel slow, go slow.

I agree in principle that the Trek Lexa Sora wasn't holding her back, but it could have been a crutch. With a fast bike now she might feel more competitive and thus be more competitive.

^^ I agree with most of that. I just have a problem with the blanket statements and assumptions in the OP about how Sora automatically turns your bike into an incapable slow pig

I mean, I ride 4 year old 8-speed that probably goes faster than both of those posers!

I can't imagine that 4 lbs or so is a huge limiting factor in a club ride. It is awesome to have a new, very lightweight bike. My wife is happy with her '73 Schwinn 3 speed.... :/

It wasn't the bike, but you know that. That many spacers and a riser stem? Looks like she should have gone up a size, maybe it's just the pic. Congrats on the new bike.

it's how the shop set them up. she ordered new shoes (tight mavics) and pedals. Once she gets properly fitted on those we will slam it and make sure she looks pro.

Those are indeed better photos. But you should leave a blank line between them when they post, so the bottom of one doesn't run into the top of the next. The whole presentation will look better.

PS - Congrats to the GF on a nice bike. Hopefully she'll enjoy it.

She's by no means slow, the bike was heavy, the wheels as well, you're crazy if you think it doesn't make a difference. If it didn't there would be no need for lighter frames or components.

Anytime you wanna ride....anytime...
I didn't say your 8 speed made you slow, hers being a low end WSD means her gearing made her cycling inefficient...

the bike was a good starter, with the gearing that came with it she seriously had to exert more effort to keep at our pace that we could maintain with a much lower cadence. Upgrading her group would've been expensive, the fact I got her bike sold for top dollar quickly contributed to making the jump to a new bike, plus we got a great deal since I was building my new bike at the same time.

I rode the Madone and actually liked it, but it doesn't matter what I like or don't like, she rode a few frames and fell in love with the ride quality and overall smoothness of the ultegra over her sora. That's all that matters

Agree that 4 pounds makes very little difference. Sometimes I get confused that I can go just as fast with a 10 pound backpack.

At 4 pounds we're talking 1-2 watts on avg if that.

Makes sense. I actually changed some of my gearing because I hated my triple.......and the fact that I can't leave anything alone. I've got a mix of Sora and Tiagra now, but I have a secret weapon........I used a 105 BB.

It really just added up with trying to upgrade her bike. Truth is she wouldn't know any better from her sora had she never test rode the other bikes, most of it came down to gearing and just sense, as far as a long term investment, this is a bike she won't have to do anything to other than ride it for the next few years
