Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sram is for the uneducated and fry-cooks.

Dura-Ace is really good, and Ultegra just doesn't cut it. I used to be on a US Army racing team, and the Ultegra lasted maybe 6 months, we went to Dura-Ace, and nobody could kill it for over 2 years. End of wisdom.
Dura-Ace cassettes are made with materials they wear out sooner.

I recently bought a used CAAD10-1 but I've not been able to ride it so far as I've been stuck in Asia on an extended business trip. I would have imagined that a SuperSix Hi-Mod would be better. Why did you decide to keep the CAAD10?

Thanks for all the info everybody! Just as confused as ever with soooo many choices. I already test rode the BMC roadracer SL01 - ultegra but I wanted to spend around $3k. I haven't had a chance yet to test ride the Scott CR-1 Pro which is closer to my price range. I rode the CAAD10 1 and I loved the ride. I can get it for under $3k at a local LBS so I figured; state of the art aluminum frame with Dura Ace at 16.5 lbs = easy decision?

In my experience, currently having 3 bikes with Dura Ace, and 2 with Ultegra, there's precious little difference. Dura Ace is a touch light, and little bit better finished. However Ultegra is a bit more durable because they didn't cut out the last ounce of weight (for example steel instead of Ti cogs).

My current race bike has Dura Ace 7800. I broke the front brifter in a crash. I couldn't find a 7800 brifter to replace it, so I put on an Ultegra 6600 brifter. Other than cosmetic, there is no perceptable difference.

On our tandem, we trashed the Dura Ace 7800 RD. Shimano doesn't currently make a Dura Ace long cage derailleur, so we replaced it with an Ultegra 6700 derailleur. The 6700 RD actually shifts better than the 7800.

So I'd agree with the Bologna comment.

Dura Ace? Which dura ace? It's probably 7900, but if it happens to be 7800, that's a little older, maybe a little cheaper now, and maybe a little harder to find compatible parts for should you need them sometime. 7800 DA would have the derailler cables coming out the sides of the brifters, whereas 7900 would have them tucked neatly under the handlebar tape (which is where the brake cables are).
I'm a CAAD9 rider with Ultegra and have a lot of respect for Dura Ace. If that CAAD10 you're thinking of fits you really well, should be great - you won't be disappointed.
But I'm not disappointed with my Ultegra choice and having some extra cycle wear with the money I saved either.

if you don't care about racing, all the more reason to go for carbon! (atleast that's what I did...rival supersix).

+1 to the person who said that they couldn't buy a 3k aluminum bike.

CAAD 10 with Dura Ace 7800 or 7900 is totally the sublime riding gruppo....but, if you really want the most direct, explosive power transfer - get it with the Cannondale Hollowgram BB30 crankset. All I can say is...OMG!!!!

I'm faster on the C10...I raced both and for whatever reason, all my best performances were on the C10..I never felt at home on that bike even with the same setup...
