Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"sunset years"??!? Hah! At 60, I feel as strong and fast as I did in my teens and 20's. Only thing is that I don't try to set any type of record on descents anymore.

I'm 57 and just rode 70 miles on Saturday. My legs felt great, and I could have gone further, but my shoulders were killing me. Of course, I have two torn rotator cuffs, so that's a different thing completely. There's no reason you can't ride for years and years after 57.

Actually, I'm getting stronger. Or more accurately, I've lost weight and feel stronger.

I'm one of the younger people in the group I ride with at 63. It's amazing how fast some of them are in their 70's. I guess riding 150 plus miles a week for decades keeps them in good shape. Here is a link to our club ride yesterday.

No, but give it another 20 or 30 years, and you'll learn to tell whether 24 is < or > 70.

At 54 I am much faster than I was when I started riding at 48. I did a 32 mile ride on Saturday and averaged about 16.2 miles per hour which included a lot of climbing. Not that I am fast but there are dozens of 60 and 70s somethings in my club that can kick my butt. I expect that when I am 60, I will be faster and have more endurance than I do today.

One of the reasons that I ride is that my energy levels are much higher than they were before I started riding.

I'm 64 in September and ride 5-6K miles/year. I once rode with a guy in his mid 70s that could FLY up big hills on a Bike Friday and on a bike tour in WI helped a 78 yo women find the final stop after a 65 mile ride. I wonder how many miles I'll be able to ride each year when I retire.

This month makes it one year since I got back into cycling after decades away from it. At 52 I feel better now than I have in the past ten years and really enjoying riding again.

It nice seeing a lot older folks on here still laying it down.
