Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike storage

Hello,

I am looking for some ideas on how to safely store my bike in the garage.
Right now it is leaning against a wall, it is fairly secure but with kids running in and out of the garage with toys I was looking for a better way. Something like the display stands in LBS, but without having to spend an enormous amount of money. And DYIs out there with some ideas?

Thanks

Not sure how your garage is set up, but you can install a pipe on the rafters to hang your bike by the seat. Gets it up and out of the way.

That is an idea....does the fact that the bike is a cf make a difference?
Any pics on how that can be done? Also any good cheap floor stands?

something like this: https://www.storeyourbike.com/

I know similar solutions are readily available at hardware stores etc... get 'em off the floor and out of harm's way.

+1. I have my three road bikes at the end of the garage all hanging on ceiling hooks. Easy to get off, and high enough that if someone drives too far it won't hit the bikes.

Rafters in my garage are too high for hooks so I use

a wall mount.

Oh! CF. Well you know that stuff is REALLY fragile and requires special handling. It can't take a lot of light or humidity. So be careful.

Here's a link to a cheap floor stand.

I have all 7 of my bikes on hooks that are installed into the ridge beam of the garage. It keeps them up high enough that you can't tell there are bikes in the garage at all when it's open unless you enter the garage and look up. To me, that is a small measure of security, combined with a steel door on the back with a heavy deadbolt, and a front door that cannot be opened manually.

I have three of the lifts shown in the link and ceiling hooks. I prefer the ceiling hooks myself because it is a lot less fiddly. I got the bike lifts for my wife and kids to make it easier for them to get up and down. The lifts are also good for anyone that has really high ceilings where they wouldn't be able to reach hooks. As stated, places like Target and Home Depot are a better place to buy the lifts. I have seen them for $20-25 at those stores.

I know we hang bikes by the seats all the time for a quick tune-up on a repair stand, but can the seats take the strain of long-term storage?

Yep, two bikes hanging on hooks in my garage.

I did use some pipe insulation on the hooks as a kind of padding for the wheels.

I haven't tried it, but this hook and pulley system from Harbor Freight is only $10. https://www.harborfreight.com/bicycle-lift-95803.html. Reviews suggest it's a fine deal but you may want to replace the slick rope and tighten up the pulley bracket.
