Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pedal / fit issue

I have been running Shimano A520 's (SPD cleat) on my road bike / road shoes since I started road riding. I seem to have my fit down. I've been happy with my speed (18.5 prety much any ride regardless of length), very comfortable with my fit (regardless of length) etc. I just upgraded to Dura Ace (7900 carbon) SL's. I knew this would mess with my fit so I tried to be systematic about the change by taking careful measurements & trying to make minor adjustments to get things back to normal, but to no avail. I'm more tired at 20 miles than at 35 and my butt's bugging me.

Has anyone gone through this going from SPD to SPD-SL cleats? Is the cleat (which appears to have a higher stack height) set on a different angle / i.e. ramped up compared to the SPDs? My speeds are averaging 18.8 / 18.9 consistently, but I feel like I'm sore & dragging an anchor. I've messed only with cleat placement & seat post height. Not with bars or seat angle / set back.

I'd appreciate any feedback you have. Thanks.

still got your old pedals and shoes? Clip an old shoe into an old pedal and take note where on your foot the pedals spindle is. Apply this to the cleat position on your new shoes. As far as East-west, and yaw, you're on your own.

IthaDan, I'm running the same road shoes, so I can't do a side by side comparison. I did however take close measurements of the shoe in accordance to the spindle (distance from toe to spindle & side of shoe to crank and transferred them over to the new set up to avoid most of this issue. This is why I'm puzzled.
