Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike problems

I've got an issue with my bike. When riding in 3-4 gear, it's noisy. If I'm climbing or standing in either of those gears, the chain pops to 5(which is rough while climbing.) I've had numerous LBS "tune ups" and adjustments, but the problem always returns. Is this my Cassette, derailers, or chain???

Thanks

Could be any of the three - if your chain is worn out you can experience skipping. Alternately, your rear DR is misadjusted (I'm assuming that since you're in the middle of the cassette it's not chain rub in the front)

What kind of bike? What kind of components? Maybe provide a picture of the rear cassette / DR?

Usually I check derailleur cable tension / adj. first. If it persists, I'd probably be eyeing the cassette. Have you put on a chain recently? How old / mileage is the chain / cassette?

the cable may be catching somewhere. Applying lube to the cable may help. If it doesnt, try replacing the cable and housing.

Have you wrecked or dropped your bike on the drive side recently? If so have a shop check your derailleur hanger alignment.

Can you define "noisy"? Where's it coming from?

No wrecks or mishaps. The chain came with the bike(3 years old?). The bike itself is a Liberty "Gravity." Triple on the front 27, gears in total. Components are Shimano Sora. The best way to describe the noise is a almost a grinding sound, possibly the chain hitting the derailer. Unsure why it only does that in those two gears. Thanks everyone

Three years on a chain could mean the chain is bad. Also a badly worn chain can cause the cassette to go. One more possibility is the cable either doesn't have lube or is binding.

My suggestion if you aren't fixing it yourself is find a LBS with a good, knowledgable mechanic. Don't go back to the same places for a tune-up or adjustment because they aren't fixing it.

I had a very similar problem as the OPs on a Campy Mirage equipped Bianchi. Because the chain had only 300 or so miles on it, I eliminated it as the cause. Turned out to be cable housing impeding the cable. But a worn out chain, cassette or a bad derailer could all cause this. IMHO, what StanSeven said, see a LBS with a really good mechanic. In my case, I never would have guessed cable housing, but the LBS mechanic went right for it and he was correct.

Also, clean the jockey wheels. They need to be clean to "float."
