Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So what's the deal with these? Are that many riders really in need of a 52/36 crankset? I love my compact. So what exactly is the target market for this set up? I just dont get it.

They're for the people whose needs are not met by a 50 x 11, but find a 39 x 28 wouldn't be low enough for their tastes. Personally, I prefer standard 53-39... I wound out my 53 x 11 a couple times today before settling into a tuck; and when I'm in "power-stroke" mode on a gradual descent, I prefer a cadence around 85-90, not 110-120, so I can throw some torque at it.
