    Weekend Cycling/Sports Reports - April 21/22

    Tell us about your cycling (or other sports) this weekend. Did you get out for a ride? Did you participate in an event? Ride solo? Do a casual ride with a group?

    Where did you ride? Got pics?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Saturday & Sunday - Rowan and I did a cycling tour this weekend.
    Friday, we packed up our panniers with everything we thought we might need for an extended cycling tour. We're a bit out of practice packing for a tour ... so it was a good exercise.
    Saturday morning, we drove to a town a couple hours away, set up the bicycles with the panniers etc., and set off.
    We decided to ride a paved/sealed rail trail to a town about 50 km away. We don't normally like rail trails and MUPs, but this one wasn't too bad ... for one thing, the sealed surface really helped. So many of them around here are gravel.
    For another thing, the trail is quite scenic, and it was nice not having to deal with motorised traffic.
    The trail was generally a climb most of the way, and especially the last 16 km, but it went quite well, even with the panniers and all.
    We arrived at the town at the top just before 5 pm, set up camp, and then walked into town to have dinner. Pizza!
    It started to rain in the middle of the night and finally quit just before 9 am, so that's when we emerged and started to pack up.
    We stopped for brunch in town at a tasty little bakery, and then began the descent. That went a lot quicker than going up!
    There were quite a few other cyclists on the trail, but not as many as I expected there might be for a beautiful autumn weekend.
    A beautiful spring day in Texas on Saturday, albeit a bit windy. Winds were from the north, so I decided on an out and back route that would have me into the wind for the first half. Temps were in the mid 60's when I started and the upper 70's at the finish. I had planned on extending the route to 79 miles but the wind took it's tool and I settled for 66 miles. I've ridden this route many times but for some reason, I made a wrong turn and had to back track to the route!
    mmmmmmmoooooooooooo
    The road was not as bad as the picture makes it look. It was chip seal but relatively smooth...the gravel they used was white so it makes it look really bad. Most of the ride was on smooth asphalt.
    We took the tandem out for a speed run yesterday. This was the same 200k route I rode for a personal best on my single bike about three weeks ago, when I had nearly perfect wind conditions. Well, we didn't have perfect wind conditions yesterday, as dstrong noted. But we took off with a tailwind and were really moving. One of the stronger LSR guys was riding with us on a single bike (and drafting). We got to the the first control at 53 miles out 17 minutes before the time opened, and that was a first for me. (Note that perm opening times are later than brevet opening times.) We ate and made a couple of bike adjustments, got the cards signed at the official time, and walked into the next control right when the time opened. But after that, we were riding back into the headwind and crosswind. We finished in 7:39, which is a personal best for me, with average rolling speed at 18.5 mph. And that was pulling the whole way, 127 miles.
    Did my first ride in more than 2 weeks today. A little 26kms with a not so fit friend. It was nice, juste enough to consider it a warm up. The weather forecast for tomorrow is 20cm of snow. So obviously I probably won't be able to ride this week again. Let's hope the best for next weekend!
    Did the city of angels fun ride in la, ca today (any other bfers there? Judging by the preponderance of sunglasses outside the helmet straps, I'm guessing not many...). 49 miles with rolling traffic closures courtesy of the city's finest. Sweet!
    I do as well, but especially if we're riding the tandem. Cows seem fascinated by the tandem.
    Went on a 225k perm with a couple other folks in Maryland; it continuously rained all day, with temps in the upper 40s. That's certainly more challenging than the warm sunny rides, but was a good time and not really all that hard. I'm sure glad I have good rain gear!
    Congrats on the Perm!
    On the second day of our weekend tour, we were packing things up when two people came over and chatted to us. One came over in order to tell us that it might rain that day. It had been raining for several hours during the night, and did look like it might start up again.
    Now I'm not sure what he expected us to do with that information (seek shelter?) ... but we thanked him and told him we had rain gear with us.
    It is indeed very nice to have decent rain gear.
