Serious learning on how to train for the 41!!
After reading a couple of recent posts here and some personal searching online on coaching, it occurred to me that the 41 has threads on just about everything under the sun except on how to do something right: train to get better!
People that know how to use a power meter or a HR monitor to properly train assume everyone else knows how to use them too. They also assume that if they read a book on it they will know as much or everything there is to know on how to do it. However, there is no place to really go and ask the simple and detailed questions we all wished we asked. For example, there is a book about how to train with a power meter, but the book doesn't tell you how to use the different software that are available (free and otherwise) to derive all the numbers they tell you are important to know. Even when you do, they don't also tell you how to use those numbers to come up with a plan to improve them. Of course, it is because they are written by people that do coaching for a living, so they won't tell you for the cost of the book how to do their job.
Here is your opportunity to ask the questions here that others more informed could come in and help with. Ask how to interpret numbers, what do they mean, how to use them to make a training plan, how does that training plan help you, etc.
Help and be helped. Be a pioneer in breaking the tradition of the 41 to just make fun of others and point to the search function.

But since your question was legitimate, there is a forum dedicated to training.

I can see some room in the 41 for a training thread, that's a mix of humor and advice. We can try it out, I suppose, and see how it goes. If it works, great, it's a value added to the 41. If not, it can always be closed down.

I told my aunt (triathlete who reads their forums) how hardly any of the threads here are actually performance based

But seriously, don't worry about reading books, power meters, HR monitors, training software, or Illudium Q-36 Space Modulators... Pesky, complicated computers, numbers & metrics all. Ick.
If you want to go faster, ride with people who are faster than you. Make sure the biggest one of them threatens you with an 80's movie-style "death wedgie" if you can't keep up. You'll get real fast, real quick.

You wouldn't want people to buy a physicians desk reference to diagnose and treat their illness.

One thing one can count on is the consistency in the 41. 7 posts and not a single positive contribution as of yet. Carry on LOL...............

How do I get faster/stronger on climbs? I can hang with almost anyone on the flats, but when the hills come I suck.

I stopped hammering on the hills (noob mistake) slow and steady, conserve the energy so you can steadily pass at the top of the hill. It's working and my averages on my climbs are going up. oh, and hill repeats.

Please explain to me, in one paragraph or less, how I can train to be faster than the rest of the guys I pedal with.

Please, guys - it's "peddle".
The best thing I have done for my hill climbing is ride with my wife. Not only does doubling back and passing her over and over do wonders for my ego, I learned from another thread it's easier to hurl insults this way as well.

here's how: one of my sons is a Cat 2 so he's reasonably strong and 190 lbs.. He was riding with a group today doing a fairly tough 1000' climb. He hung on the wheel of a 140 lb. climber the entire climb. As previously mentioned, if you want to ride faster, rider with faster folks.

That's the problem with a serious training thread in the 41.
God knows that solid advice, asking other riders/users of programs and equipment for opinions, etc would be useful...but, it would likely get buried by lame jokes and BS.
The power thread in the 33 became esoteric, and stopped being useful a while back.
The training and nutrition forum has no traffic, so I guess we're SOL.
Back to the books.

the problem is everybody seems to think that training is subjective to what they are doing. Who here is racing? who just wants to ride with the A group, or get their average up? I think for the majority of people who are serious about training know better than to ask the 41. Plain and simple. Now who has some dirty jokes to tell?
