Campy Ergo lever mechanisms - school me?

Or show me where the textbooks are ...

I have a set of 2006 pre-QS pre-Escape Ergo 10 levers, that will shift up at least 5 steps and will dump about 8 gears at a time. I like that. I need a new set of Ergo 10 levers for a new build, and I've seen some called "Ultra-Shift," for a surprisingly good price, with what seem to be the third-generation Ergopower ergonomics. I know I like that shape.

What's the operation of Ultra-shift? I may use these with a triple or not.

If you want current model 10 speed (centaur or veloce) the 2010 year model would be best if you can find them (shineybikes ?). 2009 had the mushy feel and 2011 & 2012 have limited shifting "power shift" of only 3 & 1 shift (sucks). 2009-2010 have 5&3 shifts which is fine. You could also go with older record/chorus 10

Ultra-shift is a Front derailleur / Shifter "capability"
