Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So do you still have to pay Federal taxes in the US as well as Canada? Health care is so expensive in the US I've jokingly kicked the idea around of moving to Canada. I hate the cold though.

I believe the tax treaty between US and Canada means you only have to pay Canadian tax if you live there more than 6 months in a year.

Where Brian is, Burlington/Hamilton/Toronto area, is warmer than a lot of US cities, e.g. Chicago and Boston. Hockey is great, but beers are not cheap, though.

He's in Burlington so there's very little lake effect, if any...And yes switch your location to Hamilton Area, there's better riding out here...

Nope. You pay income tax to the country in which it was earned AND the country of residence.

What the tax treaty says is that taxes paid in one country "count" as taxes paid to the other, so you wind up paying (effectively) the greater of the two.

I had to do a US tax return and a Canadian tax return for 8 years so know all about this.

Although Canada recognizes dual nationality, the United States does not.

I seem to recall that there is some expedited citizenship process between Commonwealth nations. Is that no longer the case?

Canada recognizes it but you cannot declare so at the border nor can you carry both passports with you.

You might want to check that. It was my understanding that they do, but it's not common knowledge.

This makes perfect sense, I put in Toronto area because it saves explaining where Hamilton is to my American friends and family. They never heard of it.

That....and I have, pretty much exclusively, posted in the 41 since I joined here 7 years ago, so the mods may be cutting me some slack, which I appreciate.

$45 for a case (24pk) of nasty crudweiser is hardly what I would call cheap.

Burlington could really go either way... I pretty much think of Burlington and Oakville as the same area, the extension of Mississauga. I think more people live in Burlington/Oakville commute to work in Toronto than to Hamilton, which, as a city, is a total dump, but has decent riding.
