The silver part is a steerer extender.

Yes. But then your handlebars will be 2 - 3 1/4 inches below where they are now.

You'll probably need a spacer or two also, and possibly a new cap for your headset.

Those extenders go for like $27.00 new, so I'd offer him $10 for it. I wouldn't pay more than $12 for it.

^ I know. I was just having some fun.

I honestly have no idea how much that bike is worth or how much you should pay for it. Is it a blind auction or something? Just offer whatever price they are asking if you think it's worth it.

    i see. he's asking $400. it's 600 new on BD.

if it had microshift instead of sora... i would have paid that asking price.

EDIT: i just emailed and asked about the frame size and if he'll take 250$ for it.

Sora is good quality stuff; don't believe the hype.

But I don't usually like to pay more than 1/2 price for something used. The steerer extension makes it seem like he probably didn't find the bike comfortable and probably didn't ride it much, so it's probably still pretty "new." 2/3 of the full price just seems like a lot to me (for anything).

As far as the extender goes.... when you remove it, you'll likely need no new parts.

There is a top cap on top of the extender. It is a normal stem top cap. Probalbly the original one from the bike before he put the extender on.

If you look closely, the extender sits on top of a spacer stack. My bet is that the owner simply removed the top cap and stem, put the extender on where the stem sat, with the same spacer stack as original, and then put the stem and top cap on the extender. Therefore the removal will be a simple reversal of that.

One possible issue is the top cap bolt (which us used to set the headset bearings). The extenders come with a long bolt to replace the original top cap bolt. It extends down from the top cap, through the extender, to the headset. Just like the normal, but shorter, top cap bolt. So you might have to go to your LBS and get a replacement for that bolt. It's a standard thing and you could actually find one that works at any place that sells metric hex head bolts. But it is probably easiest just to go to the LBS (with the bike) and make sure you get the right diameter and length.

Worst case - you'll have to buy another spacer or two (or a whole matching set!) from your LBS for $5.

By the way, you'll have to understand how to install a stem, adjust the headset bearings, etc. but that's simple. Or just bring it in to your LBS and tell them to remove the extender and reinstall the stem without it. They should charge no more than $10.

Is it possible that the steerer has been cut which is why the extender is on there in the first place? If so, you may be limited with your stack height adjustment.

Probably not an issue, as the extender shown is an external clamp on model, so it has to have just as much steerer to clamp onto as a regular clamp on stem, IMHO.

You're right - that's what i was trying to convey in my post above - the extender simply substitutes in place of the original stem. The steer tube could have been cut, but the photo appears to show a healthy stack of spacers below the extender, the same spacers will then exist below the stem when it is put back on place. Only possible issue is getting the proper preload bolt, if it's not there.

It's an internet bike from BikesDirect.com. These have short head tubes so the likely story is that the seller put the extender on to make it more like a Roubaix.

As with all BikesDirect bikes, the MSRP is bogus. Use the actual price for appraisal, or at least split the difference.

Protection... you never know where that stem has been.

They sell those extenders at PB. Im thinking of getting one for my kids Ace 24 since she is growing like a weed.
