Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

got a new road bike today

hello everyone.
i haven't posted in some time. I started as a newbie this february on a marin hybrid. Since then i have worked my way up to 25-30 mile rides, average speed 12-15mph. So today I bought a felt chipotle/garmin team, all carbon, with 105 components.
I am stoked. This thing is such a different beast than the marin hybrid. It seemes like once i hit the 25 mile mark on the hybrid,i realized i needed a bit more performance than i was getting. I go in for the sizing tomorrow and take it home. I feel real good about this purchase. Im in my mid fifties, and never thought i could do this, but i can,and it feels terrific.
cheers Mike

Nothing a lil Red Bull & a certain pill can fix...

On a serious note:
Age has nothing to do with performance.
I ride with older guys when I want to do longer rides.
1 guy is in his early 60's, & the other is in his mid 70's.
I'm the strongest on hills(I'm less than half their age so it's a given.) but man can they ride!
We average 60kms - 80kms, in a few hours, & they can go further.
The guy in his 70's is an activer racers, he does 100kms-180kms regularly.
I figure who else better to learn from, than a guy who's been racing all of my life/ever since I could remember.
The guy in his 60's had a stroke a few year ago, & I've been helping him rehab ever since, his endurance is off the charts.
His coordination isn't the best, but he always keeps up, & even does his duty leading the pack.
They say they like riding with "young blood" cause it keeps them pushing their limits.
I've become a much stronger/efficient rider because of these guys, they don't have that "bike snob" arrogance that too many road cyclist have in my area.
(even most of the LBS too) I love silencing these guys on my CX @ any given chance too.

+1.. Some times I meet these retired guy's in their late 60's, 10 miles into their bi-weekly 60 miler. Both ride 16-18mph with coastal traffic and one of them can really climb like a goat. They biked across Idaho last summer and plan to do it again. Im "only" 50 and hope I can be in that good of shape when Im their age. I also read a pretty good book by Roy Wallack called "Bike for Life" thats pretty interesting. A lot of good stories about old people riding, challenges older people may face and solutions.

I can only hope/dream to be in the shape they're in @ that age too.
Sounds like a good read, I'll give it a browse.

I concur. I ride with an older (retired) crowd myself, and its all i can do to keep up. Very humbling.

Congrats on the bike. I am one of the old guys you talk about. I am probably middle of the pack on the 41 independent of age, but I know two guys I ride with ocassionally in their early 60's who could drop 98% of the riders on this board. One guy is just freaky fast. I can be out on a ride hammering 25 mph and he goes by me at 30 for the fun of it. I could never stay with him when he wants to go. We are built the same...about the same height...6'...long legs, slender build, but the guy is just fast. I asked him one time where his speed came from. He told he didn't know, he was just always fast and could never stand to ride slow. He also rides big miles....50 a day is routine. He also has bad knees. His knees are a mess. He pushes a ridiculous gear, I could never push at the speeds he can sustain. Just a freak.

@Hueyhoolihan. quote'its like marring a 20 year old"....actually,Im getting married this weekend! this was my wedding present to myself,my bride just got a trek hybrid.she is a former runner,so i figured i better get a faster bike than hers,or she would leave me in the dust. I bought it from my LBS,and it is last years team model. He originally showed me the z5 which was a few hundred less. This one had considerable upgrades, and he wanted it gone..so i got it for the same price as the felt z5. I couldn't pass it up. Once I felt the rush of my measly 25 mile run,I knew i had to upgrade. I need to do a fifty by august, thats my goal. I met 2 60plus year old guys that do the pan mass challange, and they fly!! This is the best activity going. I might have to ride this bad boy to my wedding this weekend......lol
