Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here is my Halekala ride report from October - I ended up having to climb Haleakala twice 3 days apart because my Garmin lost my first ride!

Wow. You really take this "Garmin data or it didn't happen" thing seriously.

Did you need to bring anything else? Pedals? Cages/bottles? Helmet?
The bike came with a stocked saddle pack and cages. I brought my own pedals, bottles and helmet, although they did have all that stuff there.

Thanks for sharing, I like how you broke the ride down. This makes me really want to put this climb on my list of places to cycle/experience.

For a "flatlander" you must be in great shape. I spend a fair amount of time on Maui and not sure if I could make even Paia to Makawao. I've only been road riding for 5 months and starting at 62 seeing all these posts on climbing Haleakala I'd been thinking you've got to be kidding me, I could never do that. However I've really surprised myself in my short time road riding and realize I may have to put some positive thinking into the mix. Perhaps starting with the first segment to Makawao next May would be an encouraging way to begin and perhaps in a few years...

Congrats on a great ride!

I guarantee you can make that part of the ride. And who knows, once you hit Makawao, you just might decide to keep going!

Seriously, it's more do-able than you think. You really should give it a go.

I was going to go for the metric version which avoids the big climbs and it'll be my first century. My stepson did the full century in high school on his old mountain bike although he's a pretty buff surfer dude.

It is actually not that bad, you just need to be used to climbing for hours on end. Only one section is very steep, and that is short (just after Makawao as I recall). From what I've seen, the West Maui loop might be harder.

I am in pretty good shape, that being said, these other guys are right, it can be done. Having only been biking 5 months, depending on your overall fitness level, you might give yourself a bit more time, and certainly be careful on the way back down, but it's likely do-able.

If I recall correctly, there's a section coming out of a canyon (Honokohau Bay) which is like 20%, but it's less than 1km. It hurts -- a lot -- but it's over pretty quickly. Unlike those endless switchbacks between Kula and the park entrance, where it just wears your resolve down.
