2011 madone 3.1 or 2008 4.5
I have the choice of a new 2011 3.1 for 1300 at my LBS or a ebay auction for a used 4.5 2008 (listed at 1800 with a best offer option). My understanding is that they are both the lowest model in the line of their particular years, correct? Thinking that the 2008 can be bought for a little less than the 1800 asking price
Thanks for helping.

The 2008 model at the price you have listed is bearly any lower than the retail of $2139.99 according to Bikepedia, it's 4 maybe 5 years old now, and if used well, could have multiple parts needing to be replaced, no warranty or service.
The 2011 3.1 has good discount, is new, and you will have full warranty / service from a bike shop & new 5700 series components.
Wouldn't even consider the 4.5 unless it was a lot less than the 3.1
Whatever you look at, fit should also be a key factor, you will be able to confirm that this is good when buying from a LBS, much harder when buying on ebay.

Yep, and when an '08 BB shell ejects itself, you're going to want a warranty.

Do not buy an 08 4.5 for $1800, That is a frickin rip off. I bought an 08 madone 4.5 brand new for $1900 in 08, but with that being said, it was the most comfortable bike that I have ever owned.

I don't know about the price, but I love my Madone 3.1.

OMG THAT IS AN INCREDIBLE DEAL ON THE 3.1! Hurry and buy it. It's a great bike: carbon frame + decent components. I'm curious why it is so heavily discounted.

I recommend the new 3.1 instead.

I wouldn't pay more than $1200 for a 2008 even if mint. You can find madone 2009-11 4.5 and 4.7 for $1500-1800 all day long. Personally I'd take a used 4 series over the new 3 series.
$1300 for a new 3.1 is a really good price though.
