Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bicycle stereo system

So I've been trying to research stereo systems for the bike. I don't like earbuds because they are too dangerous and no I don't think a stereo system on a bike is too dangerous.

I've used the I-home system in the past but overall I felt is was way to heavy and clunky without enough payoff.

https://cyclesound.net/ seems pretty popular but they are out of production as of this writing.

These are the options I've found:
https://www.audiobike.com/index.html Seems eloquent with speakers at bar ends.

https://www.audiblerush.com seems like it might be a good solution but the reviews on Amazon are suspect and its a decent investment if it turns out to suck wind.

Podio https://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/podio/index.php seems like another option but it seems a little on the lite side. On the up side there seems to be a few of their older mp3 players still around which seem a little more eloquent.

Anyone with any experience with these or other options? I'm not really into doing my on mods but am also open to spending decent money on a really nice piece.

I bought two of the nuforce speakers and the handlebar mounts made for them from Amazon. One speaker sounds pretty good, but I wanted stereo. The speaker is designed to take a stereo input and merge them into a mono speaker. I had to rig up my own cable to take one stereo source and split it to left and right, but pinned to stero plugs. While my cable worked, it sounded great, but it developed a short. I wish I could find a cable that does that already made - my soldering skills are lacking.

Hard to imagine something loud enough on a road bike when moving that isn't immediately obnoxious when you slow down. An open design headphone speaker mounted in/on the helmet could work. I personally use a single earbud and listen to spoken word podcasts (Adam Carolla fan), those can be played loud enough to hear without needing to be loud enough to affect your hearing significantly. Music that low I would find annoying.

hey OP, i feel you. music and riding is fun in the summer time. funny, i actually bought one of these from the korean market down the street from my work. the dude sells them at the counter.

https://www.thesoundcube.com/

its a speaker and MP3 player, but you have to use an sd card. i commute with a cycle backpack and just put it in there. and its LOUD. mono recording don't work so great but remastered ac dc albums are excellent! anyway its kind of gimmicky but grocery guy says he regularly 7 hours out of a charge.....

My vote is for the audiobike bar end thing, but my question is would it annoy other riders as you pass them, and would it be fred-ly, something frowned upon.

What do you guys have to say?

Really no one here listening to music as they ride? As far as bothering other riders I wouldn't use it on a group ride. Passing others? If people are offended by a few seconds of tunes while I go by they need to live somewhere less crowded than New York. Maybe I'd be better off asking in the touring forum?

I know the technical complexities of this sport frighten and confuse some of you. Let me make this simple for you.

Rule #62 // You shall not ride with earphones.

Cycling is about getting outside and into the elements and you don’t need to be listening to Queen or Slayer in order to experience that. Immerse yourself in the rhythm and pain, not in whatever 80′s hair band you call “music”. See Rule #5 and ride your bike.[SUP]8[/SUP]

this is the worst idea ever! This is no better than that idiot that pulls up in his car with the music blaring so everyone else can hear it. No one wants to hear whatever music your playing. Just put 1 earbud in and leave one out so you can hear.

sorry I break that rule all time on my commute to work. The last thing I want to hear is everyone's ghetto music and cars drive by. So yes I listen to my ipod everyday!

But it doesn't mention *speakers*;
The Rules may need updating.

This is a stupid idea. I hope you would brake check the heck out of you if you were behind me. I dont care if it is Guns 'n Roses, Beastie Boys, or Chopin.

However, I do often put in one earbud to listen to the Braves on the radio.

There's a guy who rides with a trailer and a boombox attached to it, blaring 90s techno tunes. I want to knock him off his bike!

I got this portable speaker for my wife (not for biking purposes) and it's good quality sound, pretty loud, wireless, and plays for 4-5 hours or so on a charge. You could have an iphone in a jersey pocket and this could pick up the signal. It's not cheap and weighs a few ounces, but again good quality.

https://www.amazon.com/Soundmatters-f.../dp/B00313JD06

Would just have to figure out how to mount it on the handlebars, frame, or whatever....duct tape, velcro?

As to whether it's a good idea to play tunes while riding... I haven't confiscated her speaker for the bike yet, but I've considered it.
