Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some clipless shoe advice please

I was looking into getting a set of SPD/platform pedals but I've decided to get some Shimano 105 SL pedals instead. Picking the pedals was hard enough but it seems and rightly so that picking the shoes is as important. Any advice regarding which shoes will go well with 105's and are comfortable would be really helpful - I'm a UK size 12 US size 13 if that helps and I do have a fairly wide foot

Your feet need to decide what's comfortable. Find a shop(s) and try them on.

Shimano's brand of shoes are a good compliment to your 105's, I use their higher end model 211 or something and just bought a pair of Mavic Xyellium's at CC for an unheard of $. The Mavics are like feathers on your feet yet so so stiff.
Good luck

If you have wide feet, would look at Specialized Body Geometry shoes, as others going to a bike shop to try them on is he best options.

However if you mail order them, say from Evans you can use the 7 day distance selling regulations rule to return them if they don't fit.

Also, for cycling shoes, it's far easier to measure in euro sizes, although Specialize max out at size 47, Bontrager Shimano go upto 49.

A decent pair of shoes is going to be Ł50 minimum, more like Ł80, if your dropping this on them, is a 29 mile round trip too much to do to get a good fit?

Funny thing is Evans is where I was thinking of going. I'll ring the store and pop up there next week and try a few pairs on. Like "ThinLine" said
I was looking at Shimano's but from your comment as long as their SPD-SL the make of shoe does not matter then?

Indeed everyone's feet are different. That said, Sidi shoes are amazing My feet feel like they're having sex when I wear them.
Even on double centuries in amazing heat my feet are happy. They cost a ton, but what price is too high for happy feet?
As a plus, the heal strike pads and buckles are replaceable. Some models have sole plates that are replaceable.

Depends how you treat them. But still good to have extras available, same with tires, tubes, chain, cassette.

I would also suggest going 1/2 size too large, allowing room for thicker sox in the cold, or a thicker insert sole.

Don't know what your budget is, but I use Shimano pedals and have used several Specialized shoes. The S-Works shoes are worth every penny, though it IS a LOT of pennies. The more you pay, typically the lighter and stiffer the shoe, which equates to more power transfer.
