Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is it possible to ride rollers on a moving ship?

I was thinking of taking bike and rollers to sea with me. Riding rollers is pretty f-ing hard when the ground *isn't* moving. Is it even possible on a ship at sea? Which way would be better, aligned with the ship or a 90-degree angle?

Jon.

A small private boat or a cruise ship?

If it's a cruise ship, check the cruise company regulations, chances are good that you won't be permitted to bring the bike onboard in the first place.

On the bright side, if you can get a GPS signal, you'll have the Strava record for a long time.

This is absurd... Bring a regular trainer. No falling off.

What would you gain from rollers on a ship? Bragging rights?-- hate to tell you, but no one cares.

If you can walk or run without the assistance of railings there is no reason you shouldnt be able spin up the rollers, same balance sytem involved. Whether you specicfically would be able to do it I have no idea.

This certainly adds a new challenge to riding rollers, as if they weren't difficult enough. Anyway, I think it would be best to align with the ships's direction of travel. The ship's movement would then be more like small changes in elevation. At 90-deg, it would be more like a cross wind. Try it both ways.

It's possible, but you must mount them on a gyroscope stabilized platform.

But I think the real problem will be that rollers are painfully boring, and being on a boat gets boring pretty quickly, too.

Most of the larger 120'+ Yachts I have been on have good gyroscopic stabilizers. Works really well for moderate conditions.

Enough suspense, here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhPjqHhE9_Y
12kts, fair weather, oriented fore-aft. Hellishly difficult. I'm sure it's been accomplished before, but I'll bet nobody has video to prove it. I'll lay claim to being the first until disproven. Yes ColinL, bragging rights! I'll never win the Tour de France (or even my local crit), but Lance never did *this*... Jon.

Well done, although I think you may need some white cages on that bike....'course if you're just gonna keep riding on that boat I guess it don't matter much

A Second Class Firecontrolman brought his bike and rollers with him on a fairly small guided missile frigate in 1987 and he used to ride it up on the fo'c'sle where the ship pitched up and down as wall as rolled from side to side. It was pretty easy, he let me do it as well. Having the visual reference frame of the ship's bow moving around was a little odd at first. Nice breeze up there as well. (Tech details: rollers oriented fore&aft just forward of the 5"54 gun mount on a Brook class FFG.)
