Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Sports - June 16/17

Almost forgot it was the weekend! So, now that I've remembered ... tell us about your cycling this weekend! Where did you ride? In good weather or bad? Got pics?

Saturday - more packing and a walk ... no cycling today, much too busy preparing for a long, long ride!

How about you?

I just rode 35 miles and did it in really good time even though I am tired. My total miles for this week was about 140.

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads btw.

I would normally ride a 50 tomorrow but may just do the same 35. Weather has been great here lately but are expecting temps in the 90s mid week. Like to get as many miles in before the heat wave hits.

Finished day one of my charity ride yesterday - 118km. Poured cats and dogs plus a nasty side wind. Prepping for day 2 as I post this. On a side note, I'm a big believer in post recovery concoctions; mine comes in powder form. I don't feel worse for wear this morning.

40k Time Trial yesterday, ouch.
Preview the route for a steep hill climb race today - I expect that will be super-ouch.

Extended ride to work, making up for two days off the bike. Riding the cross bike with the newly-installed crank.

Saturday did 62 miles in Madison county. Some familiar roads, and some new, which were very nice-no traffic. Sunday, just a short 24 miles, then home to open all my bike-related Father's Day gifts.

On Friday I did 50 miles from Hua Hin to Sam Roi Yod National Park along back country roads. The views of the beaches and hills of the Sam Roi Yod (three hundred peaks) park along the route was stunning.

On Sunday I did 30 miles from Hua Hin to Cha-Am and back as my recovery ride. Rode past the Thai King's summer palace and the two army camps that serve as barracks for the King's guards.

All in all, it was a good biking weekend.

Did my second 36 today and beat yesterdays time. Was averaging 19 mph today. Really didnt have the legs/extra time for a 50 today so Ill take the total weekend mileage at 71.

So far June mileage is really shaping up to be well over 400.

A very difficult 200km randonnee. Constant climbing and descending, I was regretting my choice to take my bike fitted with down tube shifters. That bike is also 27ish pounds, and fitted with very slow rolling, heavy tires. I was really missing my racy bike.

44 miles today, pleasant weather, no wind. 7:15a start. Had planned on doing an out and back that I do quite frequently that totals about 48 miles but on one long uphill stretch there had been an auto accident and they had closed the road in my direction of travel. Several cyclists were up at the front of the line of cars, apparently waiting to get the okay to come through but looking up the road, it appeared that clean-up had barely begun and there was a bunch of car debris all over the 2 lanes. It didn't look good at all...a smaller sedan looked absolutely torn to pieces.

So at that point, I figured I'd turn around and head back. I stopped at a restaurant that has a nice view of Lake Travis and snapped a few shots (while breaking almost every bike photo rule there is!). They have a killer patio with great sunset views.

I did my first RUSA Dart, a team ride. Minimum distance is 180k, but I had a flattish route worked out for about 139 miles. Things went pretty well, didn't get too hot for us. One negative is I had planned to use a Sonic as one of the controls, but when we got there, it was one that didn't have any seating, so we went next door to a Quiznos. We had a team of 4 guys.

Congrats on finishing that!

We might be in that area around Christmas, and if I'm not mistaken, there is a ride or two put on by the BC Randonneurs in that time. A New Year's Day ride maybe?

Was on a 90-ish miles training ride yesterday, but my chain broke and I had called my wife to tke me home. Waited by the road side for almost an hour.

For the 60 miles I already completed, it was great, riding through Mt. Weather and Bluemont, absolutely beautiful and nice day for climbing. The FEMA Mt. Weather facility always gives the X-file like creeps, though.

Well ... we're about to embark on our long, long ride ... a mostly-cycling Round the World tour.

We'll be travelling (and cycling) for the next 8 months or so ... around the world. We start with Asia, then go to Europe, then South America, then North America, and finally back to Australia.

And we fly out on Wednesday.

We'll keep posting whenever we have an internet connection, but I may miss a weekend cycling thread or two along the way.

I plan to post pics on my Flickr site (click the photo in my first post here) and on my website: www.machka.net. We've also talked a bit about it in the Touring forum.

Keep cycling!! And who knows ... maybe we'll meet along the way.

Machka, did you and Rowan move to Australia permanently (aside from this trip)?

Rowan is Australian - born and raised. I am Canadian.

We met on the forums here in early 2003, then met in person in France on the Paris-Brest-Paris 2003. We married in 2008 (and Rowan had to return to Australia 10 days later). Then I moved here in 2009. I got my Temporary Residency about 5 months after I arrived which allowed me to work etc., and got my Permanent Residency 2 years later. I'm hoping to go for my citizenship after we return to Australia.
